La misión me sonreía, pues con ella iba a realizarse uno de mis mayores deseos: conocer esas tierras patagónicas en que muchos hombres de pensamiento cifran tan altas esperanzas, experimentar las impresiones de una navegación en pleno océano, y quizá ser útil a los habitantes cuasi solitarios de aquellas apartadas comarcas. La partida del transporte nacional Villarino estaba fijada para el 5 de febrero, a las 10 de la mañana. Debía llevar a su bordo al Dr. Francisco P. Moreno, perito argentino, y sus ayudantes militares y civiles, hasta Santa Cruz, punto de arranque de la nueva expedición emprendida por el infatigable hombre público. El 5 estuve listo, pero la partida fue postergándose hasta el 12, porque era necesario ensayar las dos lanchas Tornicroft que el Dr. Moreno iba a llevar consigo para explorar los lagos Argentino y Buenos Aires. Por fin hubo que limitar ese ensayo a la prueba de la caldera con presión de agua, y embarcar la lancha que se había armado, sin desarmarla completamente.
