Excerpt from In the Days of William the Conqueror The story of William the Conqueror is the story of the man who for more than a quarter of a century was the most prominent personage of western Europe. Into whose hands shall England fall, was one of the two or three great questions of the time, and it was William who solved the problem. Whether or not his claim to the English throne was just, the people and their new sovereign seemed made for each other. The English could follow; William could lead. The English could endure; William could strike the blow that made endurance needless. The English were inclined to be grave and serious; William enjoyed a jest. The English were a little slow in their thinking; William was quick-witted. The English would yield to fate; William was fate itself. Excerpt from William, Vol. 12: The Conqueror Normandy takes its name from the North men. It was the province in France which the Northmen made peculiarly their own. They gained access to it from the sea by the river Seine, which, as will be seen from the map, flows, as it were, through the heart of the country. The lower part of this river, and the sea around its mouth, are much choked up with sand and gravel, which the waves have been for ages washing in. Their incessant industry would result in closing up the passage entirely, were it not that the waters of the river must have an outlet; and thus the current, setting outward, wages perpetual war with the surf and surges which are continually breaking in. The expeditions of the Northmen, however, found their way through all these obstructions. They ascended the river with their ships, and finally gained a permanent settlement in the country. They had occupied the country for some centuries at the time when our story he gins - the province being governed by a line of princes - almost, if not quite, independent sovereigns - called the Dukes of Normandy. Excerpt from William the Conqueror: A Historical Romance This Romance was written about 1 837 when Sir C. Napier was suffering under the injustice of Sir Frederick Adam. The preface is a humorous allusion to himself, as Mr. Peter Grievous, vainly seeking redress for to laugh at, and joke upon his own misfortunes, was with him an absolute necessity. The blow given to his commander was indeed metaphorical, but never forgotten or forgiven a book exposing the red-tapism and injustice of official power was inexpiable. William the Conqueror By Jacob Abbott Rollo seems not to have considered this banishment as any very great calamity, since, far from interrupting his career of piracy and plunder, it only widened the field on which he was to pursue it. He accordingly increased the equipment and the force of his fleet, enlisted more followers, and set sail across the northern part of the German Ocean toward the British shores.
