Excerpt from King Henry V Careful comparison of the Quarto with the Ist Folio shows to some extent how far the abridgement in the Quarto was due to the manager of the theatre, and how far to the circumstances under which the Quarto version was put together. Trent, of Columbia University, has offered valuable suggestions and given important advice; and to Mr. M. Grant Daniell's patience, accuracy, and judgment this vol ume owes both its freedom from many a blunder and its possession of a carefully arranged index. Excerpt from King Henry V: The First Quarto, 1600 It wrll be generally felt, I imagrne, that these two plarn and undenrable rnstances (due to Mr Daniel's careful rngenurty) of ennssz'on on the part of the Quarto of 11nes or scenes found 1n the Folio, really settle, once and for all, the long - debated questron of precedence After thrs proof that the Folro versron was 1n exrstence before the Quarto was prrnted, rt rs clearly 1nrpossrble to consider the latter a first sketch One ventures to wonder how such a belref could ever have obtarned at all. Is rt credrble that by 1599, that rs, after wrrtrng plays for perhaps nrne or ten years, Shakspere would have done no better than thrs, even rn a first draft? I at least cannot thrnk so. Excerpt from Shakespeare's History of King Henry the Fifth The notes on textual variations have been either omitted or abridged, as the text of the play is now virtually settled. For most of the Critical Comments in the former edition I have substituted matter of my own, much of which is drawn from familiar lectures prepared for audiences of teachers and students. Minor Changes have been made throughout the Notes, and many new ones have been added, includ ing a considerable number in place of those referring to my former editions of other plays. The book is now absolutely complete in itself. I believe that teachers will prefer the new edition to the old one; but both can be used, without serious inconvenience, in the same Class or club. Excerpt from The Text of Henry V Now as to the most obvious differences between the Folio and the Quartos. The Folio in the reprint by the Shakespeare Society of New York runs to lines, the Quarto only to 1721. And even this number is less than it appears. The Quarto has a trick of splitting up its prose into very short lines in order to give it the appearance of poetry. This, of course, increases the number of lines. Estimated purely by the number of words, the advantage of the Folio would be much greater. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Third Part of King Henry the Sixth I shall now leave the opinions of others and summarise my examination of the text, or texts, before us; and proceed at once to look for evidence of those other coadjutors, Peele, Marlowe and Greene, merely premising that there is much less of any writer (other than Shakespeare) in Part III., as well as in its foundation play, than was the case in Part II. And its early form. In T he True Tragedy I see a little of Marlowe, less of Greene, more of Peele and much more of Shakespeare. And in the final play there is yet more of Shakespeare and yet less of the others. Whatever may have been the original plan, the committee seems to have dissolved and left him in possession, with Peele to advise.
