The year 1955 was a watershed one for New York’s film industry: Elia Kazan’s On the Waterfront took home eight Oscars, and, more quietly, Stanley Kubrick released the low-budget classic Killer’s Kiss. A wave of films that changed how American movies were made soon followed, led by directors such as Sidney Lumet, William Friedkin, Francis Ford Coppola, and Martin Scorsese. Yet this resurgence could not have occurred without a deeply rooted tradition of local film production. Richard Koszarski chronicles the compelling and often surprising origins of New York’s postwar film renaissance, looking beyond such classics as Naked City, Kiss of Death, and Portrait of Jennie. He examines the social, cultural, and economic forces that shaped New York filmmaking, from city politics to union regulations, and shows how decades of low-budget independent production taught local filmmakers how to capture the city’s grit, liveliness, and allure. He reveals the importance of “race films”—all-Black productions intended for segregated African American audiences—that not only helped keep the film business afloat but also nurtured a core group of writers, directors, designers, and technicians. Detailed production histories of On the Waterfront and Killer’s Kiss—films that appear here in a completely new light—illustrate the distinctive characteristics of New York cinema. Drawing on a vast array of research—including studio libraries, censorship records, union archives, and interviews with participants—“Keep ’Em in the East” rewrites a crucial chapter in the history of American cinema.

This timely professional development guide reveals what it takes to recruit—and retain—quality talent by providing smart hiring techniques for interviewing, assessing, and screening applicants. One of the most important jobs of any manager is hiring the right people. Even in organizations with a human resources department, the final hiring decision often falls on a manager who has never been trained in effectively assessing a candidate's character or skill set. Additionally, the interview process itself is fraught with legal pitfalls, making this seemingly simple task one that could become costly and problematic if mishandled. This book teaches the critical techniques for selecting the right person for the job and the strategies that eliminate expensive hiring mistakes. Hire Smart and Keep 'Em: How to Interview Strategically Using POINT lays out a proven method—the POINT process—for recruiting and retaining high quality employees. A renowned business coach, Joan C. Curtis illustrates how interviews can be strategically conducted, demonstrates how illegal interview situations can be avoided, and explains how the latest technology can be implemented to make the whole process go smoothly.

Into Medicine Hat, just before the year's big beef roundup, drift four cow-punchers from across the Border. Everything about Slick Jordan, their leader, stamps him as a dude, except the way he whirls a rope and handles his steel-dust broncho. When Jordan singles out Blue Pete for his attention, Inspector Barker, of the Mounted Police, has a hunch that trouble is about to follow in the wake of the newcomers. He learns how right his hunch was when Sergeant Mahon, Blue Pete's friend, reports on the strange happenings that delay the roundup. Blue Pete finds his time fully occupied keeping check on Jordan and his companions, who have hired out to the T-Inverted R and promptly ran foul of its foreman, Tully Mason. Secret attempts at murder and covert rustling across the Border step up the tempo of this new story in which the popular Blue Pete again proves that he can think faster than the next man, and that for him, at least, the dark expanse of the Cypress Hills holds no secrets.
