Violent crime in New York City had grown too much for the state’s criminal justice system to follow through with death penalties bogged down by the appeals process. Often, prisoners convicted of first-degree murder were given cushiony jobs while waiting for their cases to be heard. Lower-court judges were especially frustrated when they noted that several repeated offenders were “back on the street.” And it was primarily out of frustration that a secret organization was formed. The Concerned Citizens Group (CCG) was composed of twelve New Yorkers whose prime purpose was to decrease the percentage of violent crimes. And the method that the CCG chose caused it to be targeted by the NYPD, the FBI, and the mafia. Over just eighteen months, the organization publicly announced—and carried out—the execution of prisoners convicted of murder in the first degree. However, when a crime boss was also executed, a $2.5 million reward was offered for the identity of CCG members. Does the reward work, or does it solidify the membership even more?

My experience in the court system, have left me staggering, I have lost my faith in the justice system. I am just a nobody trying to tell somebody, about the way I was treated, in the court of law, by high powerful people who you would look up to, for Justice To Be Served. I think my story will make a great spiritual movie, I think my story will inspire and give so much of inspiration to someone in need for someone to hear their silent cry in their voice. I think my story will make a great true crime movie along with, how to get away with murder, why the truth did not set me free? Episodes of a soap opera, I am a fan of the Young and Restless. Black on black crimes and murders. A six month job, a six month resident and a short term relationship that ended in a DNA testing landed me in a court room, a court room where I felt discrimination, I was mislead, deceived and the presence of court house scam was there. Creditably and morale values meant nothing in that court of law I was in. So, here I am, speaking out and pray that I touch someone, to help me, bring my story back into to the light with life once again. A dream I can feel about to come to reality. Oh yes, my Jesus is getting me ready to say, Justice Have Been Served.

In his provocative analysis, Benson (economics, Florida State U.; The Independent Institute, Oakland, CA) argues for contracting out and other controversial "private justice" options as preferable to government's pervasive and misguided criminal justice role. "Why the timing may be right" is the theme of the preface by Marvin Wolfgang, Director of the U. of Pennsylvania's Sellin Center for Studies in Criminology and Criminal Law. The Austrian School of the series title favors less government economic control. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

A renowned Harvard professor's brilliant, sweeping, inspiring account of the role of justice in our society--and of the moral dilemmas we face as citizens What are our obligations to others as people in a free society? Should government tax the rich to help the poor? Is the free market fair? Is it sometimes wrong to tell the truth? Is killing sometimes morally required? Is it possible, or desirable, to legislate morality? Do individual rights and the common good conflict? Michael J. Sandel's "Justice" course is one of the most popular and influential at Harvard. Up to a thousand students pack the campus theater to hear Sandel relate the big questions of political philosophy to the most vexing issues of the day, and this fall, public television will air a series based on the course. Justice offers readers the same exhilarating journey that captivates Harvard students. This book is a searching, lyrical exploration of the meaning of justice, one that invites readers of all political persuasions to consider familiar controversies in fresh and illuminating ways. Affirmative action, same-sex marriage, physician-assisted suicide, abortion, national service, patriotism and dissent, the moral limits of markets—Sandel dramatizes the challenge of thinking through these con?icts, and shows how a surer grasp of philosophy can help us make sense of politics, morality, and our own convictions as well. Justice is lively, thought-provoking, and wise—an essential new addition to the small shelf of books that speak convincingly to the hard questions of our civic life.
