Excerpt from Journal of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, 1950, Vol. 54 The treatment covers several of the parameters, but it cannot pre sume to solve completely the problem Of tolerances. It constitutes merely a first order attack on the major quantities involved. The discussion is divided into three parts: (1) factors involving the granular appearance of the random noise; (2) factors involving the perception of adjacent differences in luminance; and (3) factors involving the translation of Signal voltages into image luminances. Excerpt from Journal of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, Vol. 60: January June, 1953 As is well known, substitution Of image orthicons for iconoscopes requires a substantial reduction of the light intensity to secure operation of the pickup tube at the proper point on the characteristic curve. Many means of accomplishing this have been suggested. We elected an extremely simple method. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Journal of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, Vol. 57: This Issue in Two Parts; Part I, December 1951 Journal; Part II, Index to Vol; 57; July-December 1951 Discussed is the use of a high-speed camera as a tool in the Company's Engi neering Division. Motion of fast moving parts is easily plotted by the use of a special timing disc graduated to sec. Through the use of negative film, film can be processed for study within two hours. The design and proving of the light, fast-moving parts in business machine mechanisms has been a difficult and time-consuming job. Advances in this field, while continuous, have been obtained only at a high cost in time and labor. In our study of the action of these mechanisms, we had been limited to the current instrumentation methods and to others which we improvised to record time and movement. But we had felt for some time that if we could slow down or actually stop the normal, rapid motion of parts under study, then our engineering work would be greatly simplified. Five years ago our Engineering Group had a particularly perplexing problem which had been under study for several years and to which a number of solutions were submitted. The question was how could we choose the right one without extensive testing. A high-speed camera capable of exposing 3000 frames a second was procured and put to work on this problem. The camera quickly proved to the satisfaction of engineering the correct solution. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Journal of the Society of Motion Picture Engineers, Vol. 49: July, 1947 Summary - This paper discusses the construction of the new Republic Productions scoring stage and includes a description of the electrical equipment used for the recording of music. In the building of the stage, which is probably the largest scoring studio in the world, aesthetic elements were given equal consideration with acoustic factors. Excerpt from Journal of the Society of Motion Picture Engineers, Vol. 51: July, 1948 If the interior of the house was lighted to a brightness Of one third the average screen brightness (with film running), and in such a way that no direct light could reach the screen, the screen could still re ceive an overlay Of light by diffusion from-the house surfaces that would approach one third Of the average screen brightness. In this case details that had a brightness less one third of the average screen brightness would tend to be washed out, and brighter contrasts would be diluted.
