My eyes have been fixed on John Wesley and the England in which his greatest work was done. We can never understand the revival of religion which glorified the eighteenth century until we see Wesley as he was, and get rid of the false impressions created by writers who have had an imperfect acquaintance with him and his evangelistic work. It is impossible for me, in this place, to express my obliga tions to all those who have helped me to write this book. I am deeply in their debt. But it has been frequently remarked that such of these as contain the most approved accounts of Mr. Wesley, have been carried out to a length which obstructs their circulation, by the intermixture of details com paratively uninteresting beyond the immediate circle of Wesleyan Methodism. The present Life, therefore, without any design to supersede larger publications, has been prepared with more special reference to go neral readers. But, as it is contracted within moderate limits chiefly by the exclusion of extraneous matter, it will, it is hoped, be found suficiently comprehensive to give the reader an adequate view of the life, labours and opinions of the eminent individual who is its sub ject; and to afford the means of correcting the most material errors and misrepresentations which have had currency respecting him. Excerpt from Wesley and Methodism What has been attempted in the present work? Certainly, not a full and particular biography of John Wesley. He, it is true, is the central figure, and it is hoped that sufficient heed has been given to his personal actions and qualities to ensure a distinct, a recognisable, and - if only it might be! - vivid portrait of that king of men. But a full and particular biography would call for more pages than go to compose the entire work. On the other hand, the aim has been something other than to string together a scries of essays on various aspects of Methodism. While the writer has avoided Tyerman's method of strict chronological order -excellent though it is for some purposes-as involving broken lights and insecure perspective, he has striven to mark the stages of Methodist evolution by treating in successive chapters characteristics of the movement, as they assumed exceptional importance at successive periods of Wesley's life.
