Compilation of the events of Jashn-e-Khusrau, a festival illuminating the accomplishments of Amir Khusrau, held at Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti and the India International Centre, Delhi, in March 2010. The festival celebrates the sūfīānā kalām (Islamic mystical poetry) of Amir Khusrau (1253-1325). The poetry has been performed for over 750 years by the qawwālī singers, and the festival puts together selected performers with distinctive style and repertoire. The book presents three essays on the history, tradition, and literature of the khānaqāh īqawwālī as attributed to Amir Khusrau, as well as a compilation of the kalām of the qawwālīs included in the CDs, with transliterations and translations.

Sufism is often described as ‘the mystical branch of Islam’. Giving some more attention to this underexposed spiritual side, it is often proposed, could help us to ease certain contemporary societal tensions. This volume emerged out of a search for scholarship that has studied connectivity between South and Central Asia from a variety of perspectives. Geographically and culturally, the vision that India has had of the region she referred to as Central Asia is of a space extending across China westward upto the Aral Sea and including within it Balkh, Bukhara and Samarkand.
