Excerpt from A Japanese-English and English-Japanese Dictionary The Author commits his work to the kind forbearance of the public. Advancing age admonishes him that this must be his last contribution to lexicography. He has done his best under the circumstances. He has laid the foundation upon which others may build a more complete and finished structure; and he is thankful that so much of the work has been given him to do. The Author cannot take his leave without thanking his many friends who have encouraged him and sympathized with him in his work; especially Rev. 0. H. Gulick of Kobe, and W. N. Whitney, M.D., Interpreter to the U. S. Legation, who have kindly rendered, him no little aid. But above all others is he indebted to Mr. Takahashi Goro, whose assistance throughout has been invaluable. Excerpt from An English-Japanese Dictionary of the Spoken Language During the quarter of a century which has elapsed since the issue of the last edition of this Dictionary the vocabulary of the Japanese Spoken Language has been enriched by the addition of a. Very considerable body of fresh terms, technical and other. Some already existed in the literary language, others have been newly coined to meet the varied needs of New Japan but all, or nearly all, are Sinico - Japanese and as such have necessarily found their way into conver sational use through the medium of the Written Language, - the press, the platform, and the bar being largely instrumental in gaining them colloquial currency. The process of colloquialization, however, is not yet, perhaps never will be, complete, and educated Japanese, to whom alone such terms are fully intelligible, probably have the written character before their mind's eye while conversing. These considerations account for the only innovation in the present. Edition of this wolk calling for special remark here, - the insertion, namely, of Chinese characters wherever it appeared that their presence would add to the interest and general utility of this compilation, which, despite this new departure, remains, both in respect of vocabulary and grammatical forms, substantially a dictionary of the Spoken Language. Excerpt from An Ainu-English-Japanese Dictionary: Including a Grammar of the Ainu Language As the work was printed by a Japanese firm at Tokyo, nearly a thousand miles from the writer's home in Sapporo, the table of errata will be found to be considerably larger than it would have been had he been in a position to see the proofs oftener. This must be the excuse for so long a list, for which, also, every apology is made. The errata belonging to the Dictionary part will be found at the end of the Dictionary, while those appertaining to the Gram mar will be found at the end of the book.
