Ashenhurst, when master of the Belfast Technical School, and his brother, of Bradford; also Mr. John Mitchell, of Belfast and Glasgow - which I thankfully acknowledge. To supply a treatise that would be alike suitable to the manu facturer, the workman, and the student would be a difiicult matter. To explain each point so fully that it would be clear to every person would make it wearisome to those having a knowledge of the subject. I have therefore endeavoured to keep the descriptions as concise as is com patible with a fairly clear explanation, which I hope will be considered the wisest plan to adopt; and, while quite aware of the many short comings of the work, I venture to hope that it will prove a valuable assistance to those wishing to improve their knowledge of jacquard weaving and designing. I cannot pretend to criticise his explanation of technical processes, but, from an examination of the proof-sheets, I am convinced that the book will be found an invaluable aid to students of both art and technical schools. We already possess numerous text-books on designing as an art, as also on the technical processes of weaving, &c., and on the materials of manufacture. Mr. Bell has aimed at bringing the technical and artistic sides of the subject together in a practical form, and has thus provided us with a valuable handbook. Though we have a Government Department of Science and Art, a knowledge of both branches is seldom united in the same individual. The artist is too often deficient in the science of his craft; while the man of science not unfrequently shows contempt for art. The author of this volume is peculiarly qualified for the task he has set himself, being a practical manufacturer as well as a designer of long experience, and thoroughly learned in the science of his subject. The sizes of the blocks and squares vary according to the different sizes preferred by each designer and according to the kind of fabrics to be designed. The point paper, designated by 8 x 8, is usually made with squares of 1 in size, and larger. If a design is to be made which requires a large number Of threads the designing paper with the smaller squares is to be preferred; if, on the other hand, designs are to be made which require but a small number of threads, the paper with the larger squares is preferable. The number of blocks to the square warpwise is always indicated first. Other designing papers used are 8 x 6, 8 x 7, 8 x 9, 8 x 10, 8 x x 16, 4 x 12, 6 x 12, 10 x 10, 12 x x 12, etc., etc. The heavy lines, or squares, serve as a unit for measure ment, as well as in helping to count Off the required number of blocks. DOWNLOAD EBOOK →Excerpt from d104ile Design: Pure and Applied On the other hand, many cloths are produced in which the weave structure or build of the fabric is of vital importance: in which the whole effect depends upon the method of interlacing the warp and the weft in the process of weaving. Such cloths are made from yarns of every well-known kind of textile fibre. Designers of these fabrics must have an intimate knowledge of cloth structure, and should thoroughly understand how to make due allowance for the various restrictions imposed upon them by the particular type of loom in which the designs are to be developed. For such men a purely art training is not an absolute necessity, unless, indeed, when they are engaged in the preparation of the more elaborately figured kinds. Where coloured yarns are extensively used, as in the woollen, worsted, and silk industries, 3. Sound knowledge of the principles of colouring and their application to the blending of the fibres, and to the arrangement of the coloured yarns, is essential; while, for certain kinds of cloth, e.g., tapestries, brocades, etc., the designer is expected to be conversant with all branches - art, colour, weave structure, and processes of production.
