"There are few Pauline statements more controversial than Romans 10:4, specifically the meaning of the word τέλος, telos.τέλος γὰρ νόμου Χριστὸς εἰς δικαιοσύνην παντὶ τῷ πιστεύοντι. The verse has traditionally been rendered, "For Christ is the end of the Law for righteousness to everyone who believes." Some say, "For the goal at which the Torah aims is the Messiah" while others prefer new beginning. Still others offer, "For Messiah is the end of the Torah, that everyone who has faith may be justified" or "Messiah is the culmination of the Torah so that there may be righteousness for everyone believes." Here, as the title indicates, we will consider what interpreters have been saying about this verse over many years and then offer our conclusion." (From Chapter 1)

The Commentary on the Second Epistle to the Corinthians is concise and clear in presentation. Great care has been spent upon philological details and on obtaining the most probable text, but much of this material is kept out of the body of the commentary and relegated to footnotes. While all the chief commentaries on the Epistle, from St. Chrysostom to the present day, have been utilized by the author, he has deliberately avoided the undue accumulation of references and quotations, and has made his own critical assessment of earlier contributions. The student will find clear guidance for the study of the text, whether he is working with the English or Greek, and a penetrating exposition of its meaning. The more advanced scholar will appreciate the balanced judgment brought to bear upon difficult passages, and the many fresh persuasive solutions proposed. In agreement with the author's wishes, Dr. Heathcote has provided a fresh translation of the text of the Epistle, making use of the French version given by Professor Hering and embodying also the critical decisions reached in the body of the Commentary.

In this close textual analysis Badenas uses the term 'telos' as his starting point to delve into a closer examination of the Greek-speaking ancient world. The study divides into three key sections: a history of exegesis, a lexical study of telos, and an exegetical study of Rom 10:4. This final part enables an in-depth analysis of the place and role of Rom 10:4 within Romans 9:11, and, in turn, of Romans 9:11 within Paul's argument more generally. In so doing, Badenas is able to offer a more informed judgement of the use of the statement 'Christ is the end of the law,' contributing insightfully to an abundance of material which proclaims the statement without acknowledgement of its greater context.

Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Theology - Biblical Theology, grade: B, University of Edinburgh (Faculty of Divinity), language: English, abstract: Dieses Essay behandelt im Detail den Halbvers 10:4a des Briefes an die Römer von Paulus.

Paul's letter to the Romans has been called "the quintessence and perfection of saving doctrine." Perhaps the most challenging and thoroughly doctrinal book of the entire New Testament, Romans deals with many issues that are basic to Christian theology and practice. In this volume respected New Testament scholar Douglas J. Moo provides a superb study of Paul's letter to the Roman Christians and restates the enduring message of Romans for Christians today. Based on the English text but bringing into the discussion the underlying Greek at every point, this commentary focuses both on theological meaning and on contemporary significance. Moo contributes to the continuing debate regarding Paul's teaching on such issues as Jewish law and the relationship between Jews and Gentiles in the people of God. He also critically interacts with "the new perspective on Paul," highlights Romans's emphasis on "practical divinity," and traces the theme of gospel throughout the epistle. - Publisher.

This book celebrates the contributions to Old Testament theology of Elmer A. Martens, President and Professor of Old Testament at Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary, Fresno, California (both positions now Emeritus). It includes 3 essays written by Martens himself, as well as 15 others written by his former students, colleagues, friends, and even one of his professors! The essays are clustered around three topics—Christians’ use of the Old Testament, aligning God’s people with God’s call for justice, and addressing the issue of land in the life of God’s people—each of which reflects an area of special interest to Martens. A biographical sketch, a list of the honoree’s varied publications, and indexes are included. Martens has had a productive career as teacher, author, and preacher—a career spanning almost six decades and five continents. After 40 years of seminary teaching, Elmer is known to many as professor. He taught his signature class, Old Testament theology, from 1968 to 2004 at Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary, shaping an entire generation of preachers and Bible teachers. His Old Testament theology textbook, God’s Design, now in its third edition, continues to be used at the seminary as well as in translation in numerous other schools around the world.
