This book is the proceeding of the International Conference on Sustainable Engineering Development and Technological Innovation (ICSEDTI 2022) that was successfully held on 11-13 October 2022 using an hybrid platform. The conference is themed “Sustainable empowerment of innovative solutions through the development of integrated scientific researches to enhance the advanced technological world”, which represents our belief of how the sustainability is essential in our approach to solve problems through technological innovation. A total of 56 papers were submitted and presented within the sessions of the conference. The papers’ topics revolve around Informatics Technology, Electrical Technology, Marine Technology, Manufacturing System and Technology, Mechanical Engineering, And also Information Industry and Management. In addition to the technical paper presentations, there were also five keynote speeches featured, and eight plenary talks were delivered. Two of the keynote speeches were delivered in person by Professor Selo from Universitas Gajah Mada, Indonesia, and Professor Goib Wiranto from the National Research and Innovation Agency, Indonesia. The rest of the keynote speeches were delivered online by Professor Yvon Kermarrec from IMT Atlantique, France; Professor Ian Gibson from University of Twente, Netherlands; and Dr. Ilham Akbar Habibie from The Association of Indonesian Engineer, Indonesia. It was a great pleasure to work with the technical program committee led by Mr. Hilfi Pardi, who have completed the imperative process of peer-review on the technical papers submitted in this conference. We are also very fortunate to have on our side the excellent organizing committee team of the Faculty of Engineering of UMRAH who work very hard to organize and support the conference. Finally, our appreciation to all the authors who have participated in this conference with their amazing achievements and enthusiasm. We firmly believe that ICSEDTI is a suitable platform for researchers, engineers, and developers who are concerned with sustainability in engineering and technological development. We hope in the coming years ICSEDTI will be better in terms of the organization of the conference, the quantity and the quality of the researches submitted, and most importantly the impact on the sustainability of technological innovation.

This research aims to develop a hybrid methodology to support lean management to improve the sustainability of the construction phase. The combination of Value Stream Mapping and Process-based Life Cycle Assessment is enhanced by integrating with simulation methods to consider the environmental performance of the construction phase. Data from predefined process patterns, Life Cycle Assessment databases, and Building Information Modelling models, are used as input to the simulation-based Value Stream Mapping model. This methodology will enable an examination of the environmental impact of particular situations as what-if scenarios, during the planning and construction phases, without compromising the achievement of the construction process objectives.

Volume 2 of the book ‘Sand Dunes of the Northern Hemisphere’ is sub-titled Characteristics, Dynamics and Provenance of Sand Dunes in the Northern Hemisphere. It brings together a vast body of information and insight into sand dune and desert systems from North Asia, Central Asia, North Africa and the Middle East. Chapters from the Russian Federation include studies on dune systems within the permafrost zone and there is a case study from temperate zone dune system in coastal Japan. Volume 2: Characteristics, Dynamics and Provenance of Sand Dunes in the Northern Hemisphere of 16 chapters in three Parts, focusses on Saharan Africa, Egypt, and Middle East and gives attention to sand mobility and encroachment with case studies from a number of countries where these matters are of concern. We also include chapters on the remote dunes in the permafrost zone and in the hyper-arid deserts of Iran. Case studies are used to highlight the characteristics of dunes and their interaction with humans in several widely divergent settings. Volume 2 concludes with some musing on the value of study of the past as key to the future and speculates on what the future might hold in the light of a warmer and drier Earth and a rise in sea level that threaten large tracts of low-lying land with marine incursions and destruction from storm surge. PART 4 Sand Mobility and Encroachment The seven chapters in this Part examine the real-world impact of sand encroachment and dune migration on people and their economic activities and the health, welfare and financial implications related to destruction of infrastructure, including human habitations. PART 5 Sand Dune Landscapes Distribution, Formation and Management Seven Case studies from several geographic regions in Africa, the Middle East, north-east Asia are presented here to demonstrate the underlying mechanisms in dune formation and the diverse approaches to their management. Human impacts such as sand mining, tourism development, combine with natural forces like climate variability to challenge the realization of an optimum management strategy. PART 6 Concluding Thoughts: Coping with an Unknown Future from a Little-known Past The two chapters in Part 6 have special roles. We are privileged to publish new research findings that are summarized here in Chapter 38 from extensive and detailed work conducted in the Kyzyl Kum, and Karakum sand seas of Central Asia. There is a strong belief that further study of the little-known past such as revealed in this study could unlock clues as to what a future Earth might look like. This leads on to speculation in Chapter 39 about the implications of what we already know about global change (not only climate change) and the impact of the Anthropocene on the dune systems, both inland and coastal. Sea level rise, marine incursions and an increase in extreme weather events will affect dune systems and sand seas on the Northern Hemisphere (and beyond).

The global construction sector is infamous for high levels of injuries, accidents and fatalities, and poor health and well-being of its workforce. While this record appears in both developed and developing countries, the situation is worse in developing countries, where major spending on infrastructure development is expected. There is an urgent need to improve construction health and safety (H&S) in developing countries. The improvement calls for the development of context-specific solutions underpinned by research into challenges and related solutions. This edited volume advances the current understanding of construction H&S in developing countries by revealing context-specific issues and challenges that have hitherto not been well explored in the literature, and applying emergent H&S management approaches and practices in developing countries. Coverage includes countries from the regions of sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe. This book, which is the first compendium of research into construction H&S issues in developing countries, adds considerable insight into the field and presents innovative solutions to help address poor H&S in construction in developing nations. It is a must read for all construction professionals, researchers and practitioners interested in construction and occupational H&S, safety management, engineering management and development studies.

This edited volume explores and dissects Africa's economic growth and sustainable development using an optimal conceptual model of the progressive continent's development up to and until 2030. Africa is studied not against the background of developed (OECD) and leading developing (e.g. BRICS) countries, but as a separate economy and as a self-sufficient region which follows its own priorities, and implements its own unique opportunities and vectors of growth and development. This first volume addresses the contemporary and topical issues of inclusive growth, digital modernisation, and sustainable development, recommending policy outcomes for the future.

With the knowledge economy playing such a critical role in global economic development, increasing the number of Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD) graduates in higher education institutions worldwide has been imperative. The knowledge economy emphasises the importance of critical thinkers and researchers, as 'doctoral education cultivates thinkers and researchers’ and equips them to participate in development. African-identifying females account for 30% of doctoral graduates in sub-Saharan African countries, even when PhD education is viewed as an entry into academia and a gateway to careers in research and other disciplines. There is a paucity of research regarding PhD graduates who are specifically women in Africa; as a result, there is little information about their attributes to success in PhD studies, what opportunities and freedoms they have, and what challenges they face during their PhD journey, along with their motivation to overcome these challenges so that they can achieve their goals. It is essential for women in Africa to complete their PhD education to contribute to the development of their countries as some scholars believe no nation can grow without women’s participation. Thus, modern civilisation is the result of males and females cooperating in modern society. Even though some women complete their PhD studies, there is scant research on what strategies enabled their success. Instead, the reasons for their attrition are known. This book aims to contribute to PhD education scholarship, specifically for women in Africa. It allows women in Africa to narrate their PhD experiences through resilience theory and the capabilities approach lenses..
