The vast extent of the investment in concrete structures in modern times has emphasized the need to maintain these structures in a systematic manner, so that they retain their structural integrity and full usefulness. Such maintenance must be preceded by regular and thorough inspection. This Guide to Good Practice describes the many types of damage - slight or more serious - which may be discovered and the equipment used to carry out inspections. Suggested inspection intervals, related to the severity of loadings and environmental conditions, are given.

For the ongoing condition assessment of concrete structures, it is necessary to identify the extent, nature, cause and prognosis of any deterioration using a range of tools and methods, including prediction models. Combined with the original design and construction details, this gives a vast amount of information over a long time period. A framework concept is therefore needed to process the entirety of the information in order to make sound investment decisions on future maintenance management. To provide such a framework, fib Bulletin 59 summarizes information published infib Bulletins 17, 22, 34 and 44 relevant to the control and assessment of reinforced concrete structures, and develops a practical concept of how, when and where to control the condition of an existing concrete structure in order to facilitate structural management. Thus it gives a basis for processing relevant information in order to make decisions on the appropriate course of action for condition control.

Steel-Reinforced Concrete Structures: Assessment and Repair of Corrosion, Third Edition examines the corrosion of reinforced concrete from a practical point of view, highlights protective design and repair procedures, and presents ongoing maintenance protocols. Updated throughout, this new edition adds additional information on concrete repair and reviews new examples of the effects of corrosion on both prestressed and reinforced concrete structures. It also examines economic analysis procedures and the probability of structural failures to define structural risk assessment and covers precautions and recommendations for protecting reinforced concrete structures from corrosion based on the latest codes and specifications. Features: Updated throughout and adds all new information on advanced testing and repair techniques. Discusses the theoretical and practical methods of performing structural assessments. Explains precautions for design and construction that reduce the risk of structural corrosion. Covers traditional and advanced techniques for repair and how to choose the best methods. Utilizes the newest building codes, specifications, and standards regarding construction and corrosion.

This report is the result of the work of the former FIP Commission 10: Management and strengthening of concrete structures, which replaced to the former FIP Commission 10: Maintenance, operation and use in 1995. The former CEB Commission V: Operation and Use and in particular its Task Group 5.4: Assessment, maintenance and repair also played a role in this report. When in 1998 the FIP merged with the CEB to form the fib, the well advanced writing was completed by a small editorial group. The purpose of the report is twofold: to give an overview of the issues relating to the management of concrete structures in general and to add details about assessment and remedial action, as these are important technical aspects of management and maintenance systems. The more general aspects of asset management are dealt with in Chapter 1, aimed at owners and decision-makers. Chapters 2 and 3, aimed at consultants and contractors, deal with decision-making in the assessment process. A review of remediation techniques is given in Chapter 3, intended to help in the selection of remedial actions rather than in their execution. The report also includes some significant appendices regarding load testing, monitoring and fire, and also special considerations related to seismic retrofitting. Appendix 1 offers keywords that the various actors in this field could use for a common language.

This manual is intended to guide, assist, and instruct concrete inspectors and others engaged in concrete construction and testing, including field engineers, construction superintendents, supervisors, laboratory and field technicians, and workers. Designers may also find the manual to be a valuable reference by using the information to better adapt their designs to the realities of field construction. Because of the diverse possible uses of the manual and the varied backgrounds of the readers, it includes the reasoning behind the technical instructions. The field of concrete construction has expanded dramatically over the years to reflect the many advances that have taken place in the concrete industry. Although many of the fundamentals presented in previous editions of this manual remain relevant and technically correct, this eleventh edition incorporates new material to address these advances in technology
