Essig's signal success in the discovery and practice of control measures pointed him out as one fit to instruct the public as to the life histories of insects and the best methods to control their attacks. This led to the publication by the State Commission of Horticulture two years ago of "Injurious and Beneficial Insects of California." Anticipating a great demand for the book, a very large edition was issued. These anticipations were greatly exceeded, and very soon the edition was wholly exhausted. Commendation of the work was most hearty and reached the Commission from all countries, far and near. The call for another edition was loud and general. The Commission is greatly pleased to heed this request in the present enlarged and improved edition, which it feels sure will be very heartily welcomed.
