Excerpt from India and Her Neighbors All eyes in the East, as in the West, have long expected the struggle for supremacy between England and Russia. That struggle, if for a season deferred, still appears to be inevitable. Every act in the great drama of war between Russia and Turkey has most powerfully affected the nations of Central Asia and agitated our northwest frontier in India. While in our peacable and well-ordered possessions the call to arms against the Czar has excited the utmost enthusiasm. The Seikh and the Gourka, the fiercest soldiers in Asia, to whom the din of battle is as the breath of their nostrils, vie in ardor with the Mussulman, who burns to avenge the wrongs of the Head of his faith. Even the Hindustanee, forgetting his caste restraints and prejudices, longs to strike a blow for those whose salt he and his fathers have eaten in contentment and peace. In Northern India, the Punjab and the border lands beyond, we have an inexhaustible field for recruiting men of fine physique, whose trade is war, and accustomed to arms from childhood. "There never was put forward a greater fallacy or an error more likely to be mischievous, than that the Turkish question was of no importance in an Indian point of view." The grand problem now in course of solution in Turkey must affect in its results, whatever they may be, in the most immediate and powerful manner, our prestige and prosperity in India. Even during the Crimean campaign, the varying fortunes of the field elicited either the apprehension or the applause of the nations of the East, from the shepherd in his solitude to the warrior chief in his stronghold, while thousands of Moolahs prayed Allah to bless the arms of the "Sooltan of Room." When the fall of Sebastopol was announced at Dera Ismael Khan, on the Upper Indus, the news was received with the greatest enthusiasm by all classes. The bazaars of the city were brilliantly illuminated, every wealthy shopkeeper displaying from 1,000 to 1,200 lamps. Excerpt from Indian and Spanish Neighbours To promote acquaintance with our Indian and Spanish neighbours, and to reveal what may and must be done for them, through glimpses of what has been done, these chapters have been written. They are but points of departure sign-boards set up to say, This way. They are not meant to be exhaustive, but suggestive. It is earnestly hoped that they may indicate and direct further improving and delightful study and wider research. Much work has been done, but even a little study will show needs immeasurably beyond our own power to supply. There is always a heart break in this. But there is always the great army Of the uninterested to win over, and knowledge can be passed on. It is better to gain half a share from another than to give double share one's self. The responsibility Of engaging others is as great as that Of doing and giving one's own pro portion. One whose beautiful life was devoted to missions, but who was denied the joy Of fill ing the cup according to her own intense desire, sought to enlist others by presenting the need and the plea for larger measure, saying, Here I bring my empty cup, praying that some one else may fill it as I cannot. Who will fill my empty cup? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Teepee Neighbors Thus does the Indian know the white man; thus, and in the light of his own Old evil stories of the past. It is not to be wondered at that he regards him as an altogether unadmirable individual. The sketch called Civilization is entirely typical of his mental attitude toward his white neighbor. By far the most harrowing fact of reservation life is the great, omnipresent, overwhelming and constant nearness of death. Indeed, death is no more at home On the river Styx itself than within the boundary lines of the ordinary reservation. Excerpt from China and Her Neighbours: France in Indo-China, Russia and China, India and Thibet The series of papers, for example, on French operations in indo-china, written to elucidate the several events as they took place, will, it is believed, be found to furnish a fairly complete narrative of the whole course of that remarkable enterprise. Excerpt from Adventures Among the Indians The character of the aboriginal inhabitants of the western continent is in many respects remarkable and striking. It possesses great interest for the student of history as well as the observer of human nature. Still this character has never been properly exhibited in a connected view. One is obliged to detect the traits in detached incidents and scattered descriptions: and thus by a sort of inductive process to determine the real disposition, powers and capabilities of the North American Savage. It is for the purpose of bringing the materials of this inductive process within the compass of a single volume of moderate size that these "Anecdotes" have been collected. They present the savage in all his various aspects and relations, in all circumstances of sorrow and joy, danger, difficulty and triumph. Excerpt from Howrah The deep channel alternates from left to right and vice cersa according to the windings of the river, except where deflected by the large tributaries which debouch into it at the southern limit of this district. Proceeding from Howrah Bridge, the deep channel runs on the Calcutta side in the Calcutta Reach past the Fort and Kidderpore to Garden Reach. At Rajganj, Opposite Hangman Point, it crosses over to the Howrah Side, and follows the Sankrail Reach as far as Melancholy (menikhali) Point. It then zigzags from left to right at each bend. Excerpt from Good Indian T was somewhere in the seventies when old Peaceful Hart woke to a realization that gold-hunting and Iumbago do not take kindly to one another, and the fact that his pipe and dim-eyed meditation appealed to him more keenly than did his prospector's pick and shovel and pan seemed to imply that he was growing old. He was a silent man, by occupation and by nature, so he said nothing about it; but, like the wild things of prairie and wood, instinctively began preparing for the winter of his life. Where he had lately been wash ing tentatively the sand along Snake River, he built a ranch. His prospector's tools he used in digging ditches to irrigate his new-made meadows, and his mining days he lived over again only in halting recital to his sons when they clamored for details of the old days when the Indians were not mere untidy neighbors to be gos siped with and fed, but enemies to be fought, upon occasion. Excerpt from Yourself and the Neighbours Your lunch you called your bit. It was a hunk Of oaten bread or, in poorer times, india-bread that your mother crammed into your pocket before leaving home. This efieminacy of a lunch you fol lowed until you knew better - that is to say, for a fortnight. After that you either ate it, for con venience sake, on the way to school, or used it as ammunition in a pelting match. If your fellows dis covered you eating, above all, a bit Of the despised india-bread at school, or shamefully concealing it on your person, they sarcastically sang at you. Excerpt from Early History of the Creek, Indians and Their Neighbors The present paper originated in an attempt to prepare a report on the Indians of the Creek Confederacy similar to that made in Bulletin 43 for those along the lower course of the Mississippi River. In this study, however, it is still possible to add information obtained from living Indians, about 9,000 of whom were enumerated in 1910. But when material from all sources had been tentatively brought together the amount was found to be so great that it was thought advisable to divide the work into two or three different sections for separate publication. As our account of the distribution, interrelationship, and history of these people is to be gathered rather from documentary sources than from field investigations it is naturally the first to be ready for presentation. Since it has been compiled primarily for ethnological purposes, no attempt has been made to give a complete account of the later fortunes of the tribes under consideration, such important chapters in their career as the Creek and Seminole wars and the westward emigration belonging within the province of the historian strictly so considered. The writer's main endeavor has been to trace their movements from earliest times until they are caught up into the broad stream of later history in which concealment is practically impossible. Although not pretending that this work is as yet by any means complete, he has aimed to furnish something in the nature of an encyclopedia of information regarding the history of the southeastern Indians for the period covered, and hence has usually included direct quotations instead of attempting to recast the material in his own words. It was found that a satisfactory study of the Creek Indians would make it necessary to extend the scope of this work so as to consider all of the eastern tribes of the Muskhogean stock as well as the Indians of Florida.
