Biotechnology as any technique that used living organisms to make or modify a product, to improve plants or animals or to develop microorganisms for specific uses. Biotechnology as any technique that used living organisms to make or modify a product, to improve plants or animals or to develop microorganisms for specific uses. Animal biotechnology in use today is based on the science of genetic engineering. Under the umbrella of genetic engineering exist other technologies, such as transgenics and cloning, that also are used in animal biotechnology. Immunology is the study of the immune system and is a very important branch of the medical and biological sciences. The immune system protects us from infection through various lines of defence. If the immune system is not functioning as it should, it can result in disease, such as autoimmunity, allergy and cancer. Immunity is a biological term that describes a state of having sufficient biological defences to avoid infection, disease, or other unwanted biological invasion. Immunity involves both specific and non-specific components. The non-specific components act either as barriers or as eliminators of wide range of pathogens irrespective of antigenic specificity. Other components of the immune system adapt themselves to each new disease encountered and are able to generate pathogen-specific immunity. This book sums up information about Animal Biotechnology and is a valuable tool for students as well as teachers. The aim of this book is to provide the readers materials on the subject in a lucid and readable form so as to enable the research scholars, scientists, zoologist and even the common men to understand the subject properly.

The animal sector in India is poised for a giant leap through technology innovations. This sector also offers a 'virgin' hitherto untapped market for investment opportunities. This treatise is a preliminary but a pioneering attempt towards analyzing the landscape of the veterinary vaccines and diagnostics industry in India. The farm animal, pet and poultry industry form the core of this segment with pigs, cats and equines forming the minor segment. All these sectors work on different ecologies. The livestock and poultry health sector grow as a result of adherence to food safety, disease prevention and productivity improvement principles whereas the companion animal health sectors grows due to affordability and emotional bonding with the owner. With biotechnology traversing all realms of this sector, new generation vaccines and point-of-care diagnostics are poised for active permeation throughout this sector. With the threat of emerging, reemerging and zoonotic diseases looming large, the preparedness to handle them has never been felt this important ever before. In addition to vaccines and diagnostics, information on other related areas such as regulations, biosafety, animal quarantine, economic impact of diseases etc. have also been compiled. All these areas complement the animal industry in this country. This book would be helpful not only to industry but also for the upcoming entrepreneurs, researchers and students who are looking for business opportunities. This book is a must for all scientists in this field and also to those interested in the fields of immunology, biotechnology and vaccine development. This would be a fine addition to a library in all veterinary colleges and other universities.

This book covers the whole immunology and immune technology of pharmaceutical aspects; it begins with the main players of immunology and covers all components of immunology such as complement, antigens, immunoglobulin’s, antigen-antibody reactions and selected tests, cells involved In immune responses and antigen recognition. Chapter seven covers the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and t-cell receptors - role in immune responses. Chapter eight deals with the response to antigen: Processing and presentation MHC restriction and role of the thymus. Moreover, cell-mediated immunity, cytokines and immunoregulation, immunization, MHC: genetics and role in transplantation is discussed in this section. Tolerance and autoimmunity, hypersensitivity reactions, tumor immunology and immunodeficiency is discussed in the subsequent chapters. Finally, Hybridoma technology for production of monoclonal antibodies, vaccine technology and immunological techniques is discussed in the last three chapters. This book is written as there need of text book for the students of medical and paramedical discipline such as Pharmacy, Medicine etc., and biotechnology, biomedical, Biochemical, microbiology, biochemistry from both engineering and biology backgrounds. The main features of this book are that the coverage of various Indian Universities curriculum of the aforesaid subjects and each contains illustrations to understand the subject matter.

There has been a dramatic increase in the perception of the value of animal cell biotechnology to the research and manufacturing communities in recent years. This volume seeks to keep the reader up-to-date with this progress. This sixth and final volume in the series concentrates on the biology of animal cells in culture, giving special attention to the relationship between biology and the ability to use such cells productively. As the search continues for greater productivity, there is a need to understand the switches within cells that control expression. Additional abilities to manipulate those switches in a controllable manner are also required. In the last five years, considerable progress has been made in the elucidation of the mechanisms for cell signaling and control of gene expression. The 13 chapters of this volume are devoted to these subjects and to techniques in areas of particular concern in manufacturing circles. The achievements in the field to date are described in this book, which, together with its five companion volumes in the series, will provide a building block for the future development of animal cell biotechnology.
