Lower urinary tract symptoms may be the result of a structural or functional abn- mality. To consider either in isolation would be an incomplete assessment, but c- bined anatomical and functional imaging provides a more powerful and complete tool for investigation of lower urinary tract malfunction. Yet many of the currently available radiological texts concerning lower urinary tract imaging fail to discuss these two aspects in a holistic manner. We hope that this book will fll this gap. Although it is written to be as comprehensive as possible such that it covers the vast majority of lower urinary tract disorders that will be encountered in adult urological practice, it is not meant to replace conventional textbooks of uroradiology. Rather, it is meant to be practical and user friendly. It is intended for everyday clinical use; it should allow the trainee and trained radiologist or urologist to plan a logical, yet complete radiological and dynamic investigation of the lower urinary tract. It should also be useful for nurse practitioners, medical students, and all other medical staff who commonly manage lower urinary tract disorders.

Significant recent advances in the imaging of the lower urinary tract are comprehensively presented in this handbook. It offers information on both imaging examinations and interventional techniques with all the modern modalities, including MRI and ultrasound. The contributors are all experts in clinical urology; their varying and at times conflicting opinions track the fast-moving pace in the field and demonstrate the complexity of the subject. The approach is disease-oriented, though grouped by anatomic region. Each chapter covers etiology, physiology, pathology, epidemiology, clinical presentations and especially diagnostic imaging, but also the appropriate interventional radiologic techniques for both diagnosis and treatment.

This book is a comprehensive guide to lower urinary tract dysfunction that draws extensively on actual urodynamic traces and patient cases to ensure that the imparted knowledge will be readily transferable to clinical practice. The impressive collection of clinical cases is used to illustrate basic concepts of lower urinary tract function and to document urodynamic findings and typical patterns in a wide range of commonly encountered conditions. In addition, attention is drawn to frequent pitfalls and artifacts. Readers will be able to assess their skill in reaching the correct diagnostic conclusion in each case, as in addition to the urodynamic trace a full set of information is provided on aspects such as patient history, physical examination, voiding diary, laboratory examination, imaging studies, and cystourethroscopy, thereby directly simulating real-life clinical practice. The presented cases are drawn from the large clinical database that Professor Seung-June Oh has prospectively accumulated during the past 16 years of clinical practice. The book will be invaluable for residents and other practitioners and will also be of interest for medical students.

The preface to Urodynamics - Upper and Lower Urinary Tract edited by LUTZEYER and MELCHIOR (Springer-Verlag 1973) mentions the self-evidence of using functional examinations in other medical de partments: "It is self-evident that the cardiologist uses the EeG not just routinely, but continuously in an intensive-care unit, where it is computerized and always on call. It is self-evident, too, in gastro enterology and pulmology that a functional analysis is based on readings of different electronic probes. In urology, however, we tend to rely on optical control by cystoscopy, static data in order to reach a functional interpretation that is based on this information alone. " Referring to the preface mentioned above, especially the upper uri nary tract is said to be assessed mainly from an anatomic-morpho logic point of view in the clinical routine, though in this case we are also mainly concerned with an active transport system. 1971, which the Twelve years after the urodynamic meeting in above-mentioned volume was based on, a second urodynamic meet ing took place in Aachen that was called and also dealt with "Re-: viewing the Aachen 1971 Meeting. " Its purpose was to review which of the statements that had been made more than a decade before were still valuable, what had to be added or revised, and which ex perimental tests and results could be clinically applied.

Imaging and Technology: Principles and Clinical Applications is a practical and user-friendly consolidated source book for urologists, and urologists in training, regarding the basic science of imaging modalities used on a day-to-day basis in urological practice. Similarly, the intention is to provide an introduction to the technology that is used in the practice of urological surgery and the management of urological patients in the clinical setting. This knowledge level is appropriate for certification for independent consultant practice in urology in the UK. The book is also valuable to urologists and urological trainees outside of the UK and in other surgical specialities.
