This book provides an in-depth treatment of the three important topics related to image and video databases: restoration, watermarking and retrieval. It is the result of the participation of the Delft University of Technology in the European Union ACTS program, a pre-competitive R&D program on Advanced Communications Technologies and Services (1994-1998). In particular the book has benefited from participation in the AURORA and SMASH projects respectively automated film and video restoration and storage for multimedia systems (watermarking & retrieval).

Content-Based Image And Video Retrieval addresses the basic concepts and techniques for designing content-based image and video retrieval systems. It also discusses a variety of design choices for the key components of these systems. This book gives a comprehensive survey of the content-based image retrieval systems, including several content-based video retrieval systems. The survey includes both research and commercial content-based retrieval systems. Content-Based Image And Video Retrieval includes pointers to two hundred representative bibliographic references on this field, ranging from survey papers to descriptions of recent work in the area, entire books and more than seventy websites. Finally, the book presents a detailed case study of designing MUSE–a content-based image retrieval system developed at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the First International Workshop on Digital Watermarking, IWDW 2002, held in Seoul, Korea in November 2002. The 19 revised full papers presented together with two invited papers were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and improvement from 64 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on fundamentals, new algorithms, watermarking unusual content, fragile watermarking, robust watermarking, and adaptive watermarking.

Content-Based Analysis Of Digital Video focuses on fundamental issues underlying the development of content access mechanisms for digital video. It treats topics that are critical to successfully automating the video content extraction and retrieval processes, and includes coverage of: - Video parsing, - Video content indexing and representation, - Affective video content analysis. In this well illustrated book the author integrates related information currently scattered throughout the literature and combines it with new ideas into a unified theoretical approach to video content analysis. The material also suggests ideas for future research. Systems developers, researchers and students working in the area of content-based analysis and retrieval of video and multimedia in general will find this book invaluable.

We are happy to present to you the proceedings of the 2nd International Workshop on Digital Watermarking, IWDW 2003. Since its modern re-appearance in the academic community in the early 1990s, great progress has been made in understanding both the capabilities and the weaknesses of digital watermarking. On the theoretical side, we all are now well aware of the fact that digital waterma- ing is best viewed as a form of communication using side information. In the case of digital watermarking the side information in question is the document to be wat- marked. This insight has led to a better understanding of the limits of the capacity and robustness of digital watermarking algorithms. It has also led to new and improved watermarking algorithms, both in terms of capacity and imperceptibility. Similarly, the role of human perception, and models thereof, has been greatly enhanced in the study and design of digital watermarking algorithms and systems. On the practical side, applications of watermarking are not yet abundant. The original euphoria on the role of digital watermarking in copy protection and copyright prot- tion has not resulted in widespread usage in practical systems. With hindsight, a n- ber of reasons can be given for this lack of practical applications.

Digital audio, video, images, and documents are flying through cyberspace to their respective owners. Unfortunately, along the way, individuals may choose to intervene and take this content for themselves. Digital watermarking and steganography technology greatly reduces the instances of this by limiting or eliminating the ability of third parties to decipher the content that he has taken. The many techiniques of digital watermarking (embedding a code) and steganography (hiding information) continue to evolve as applications that necessitate them do the same. The authors of this second edition provide an update on the framework for applying these techniques that they provided researchers and professionals in the first well-received edition. Steganography and steganalysis (the art of detecting hidden information) have been added to a robust treatment of digital watermarking, as many in each field research and deal with the other. New material includes watermarking with side information, QIM, and dirty-paper codes. The revision and inclusion of new material by these influential authors has created a must-own book for anyone in this profession. This new edition now contains essential information on steganalysis and steganography New concepts and new applications including QIM introduced Digital watermark embedding is given a complete update with new processes and applications

The major expectation from the fourth generation (4G) of wireless communication networks is to be able to handle much higher data rates, allowing users to seamlessly reconnect to different networks even within the same session. Advanced Wireless Networks gives readers a comprehensive integral presentation of the main issues in 4G wireless networks, showing the wide scope and inter-relation between different elements of the network. This book adopts a logical approach, beginning each chapter with introductory material, before proceeding to more advanced topics and tools for system analysis. Its presentation of theory and practice makes it ideal for readers working with the technology, or those in the midst of researching the topic. Covers mobile, WLAN, sensor, ad hoc, bio-inspired and cognitive networks as well as discussing cross-layer optimisation, adaptability and reconfigurability Includes hot topics such as network management, mobility and hand-offs, adaptive resource management, QoS, and solutions for achieving energy efficient wireless networks Discusses security issues, an essential element of working with wireless networks Supports the advanced university and training courses in the field and includes an extensive list of references Providing comprehensive coverage of the current status of wireless networks and their future, this book is a vital source of information for those involved in the research and development of mobile communications, as well as the industry players using and selling this technology. Companion website features three appendices: Components of CRE, Introduction to Medium Access Control and Elements of Queueing Theory
