Based on true events, ICE-X86: Freezing the Cold War tells of a top-secret mission: a team of young engineers who face insurmountable oddsice storms, polar bears, military bias, espionage, fear and self-doubtwhile launching torpedoes from the surface of the Arctic ice pack. Will secret torpedo tests help to mitigate the Cold Wars greatest threat, or will a rogue Russian submarine that interrupts the mission spark international retaliation and something even worse? Of all the high level, vital and extremely challenging programs of my military/federal career, the ICE-X project tops the list. I was honored to lead this team of dedicated engineers to successfully overcome the design, logistics and tactical impossibilities of the Arctic environment and prove the U.S.s capabilities against a very serious and real world threat. Actual ICE-X team leader (Alex Trinola in the story). What a terrific adventure! We had no idea the ramifications of these tests until the top-secret mission was over. Len Morini, ICE-X team design engineer, 1986. Only time will tell the full strategic significance of these tests at the top of the worldhow they will influence the course of history. Secretary of the Navy, John F. Lehman Jr., Arctic Circle, 1986. This story brought back memories of the exciting times I had aboard the USS Hawkbillthe 666 Devil Boata worthwhile adventure. Thomas D. Warner, Navy Chief (Ret.)

In view of all production and productivity problems the seaweed aquaculture industry has been facing as well as the impact of the seaweed die-off on the Island economy with sharp decline of income and revenues for thousands of farmers and traders and, recognizing the compounded problems that about 20,000 seaweed farmers' livelihood are based on a single aquaculture system affecting mostly women and youth, the FAO-funded Technical Cooperation Programme “Support to the Aquaculture Subsector of Zanzibar” (TCP/URT/3401) recognized and recommended the Biological and Economic Research on Seaweed as a relevant pillar of the Aquaculture Development Strategy Plan. This technical report is part of the FAO-TZ project “Support to Seaweed Diseases and Die-off Understanding and Eradication in Zanzibar” TCP/URT/3601/C1, and covers an initial analysis of the die-offs due to epiphyte infestation and ice-ice disease in Zanzibar. The assessment is mainly based on site visits to the seaweed farms in Unguja and Pemba and laboratorial analysis of collected seaweed samples conducted by the authors between February and June 2017. Findings were cross-checked with a literature review on the topic and presented during stakeholders’ meetings in both Islands.

Chinese craft design excelled in the manipulation of geometric space and reached its highest point in the design of window lattices on Chinese houses. Long recognized as an important folk art, window lattices have been generally neglected as an art form and this book is the first work on the subject since the 17th century. Fortunately, it is also the definitive work on the subject, and though no book can present a complete coverage of Chinese lattice, this book is a great classic study and an incredibly rich source of design for Westerners. More than 1200 designs are shown here, arranged in a clear system of classification that includes 22 areas of related design — borders, brackets, tail pieces, and so on. The lattices are classified according to one basic figure or concept, and the hundreds of beautiful design variations fall into only 26 categories: parallelogram, octagon or octagon square, hexagon, single focus frames, double focus frames, triple focus frames, quintuple focus frames, no focus frames, wedge-lock, presentation, out-lock, in-out bound, the Han line, parallel waves, opposed waves, recurving wave, loop-continued, like swastikas (a Buddhist symbol), unlike swastikas, central Ju I, allover Ju I, S-scroll, U-scroll, rustic ice-ray, symmetrical ice-ray, and square and round. Each category is introduced in sections at the front. In addition, there is usually a short description for each design and every design is designated by name, location, and approximate date of construction. Professor Dye spent over 21 years studying and copying lattices all over China, and because of the ravages of time and changing cultural values, this collection can probably never be duplicated. Balanced, intricate, sometimes asymmetrical, usually harmonious, these lattice designs present a wealth of material for the Western commercial artist, textile designer, pattern-maker, and craftsman. Reflecting their Chinese heritage, these designs are universal and can be used almost anywhere.

Significant achievements have been made at the cross-roads of physics and planetary science. In the second half of the twentieth century, the discipline of planetary sciences has witnessed three major episodes which have revolutionized its approach and content: (i) the plate-tectonic theory, (ii) human landing and discoveries in planetary astronomy and (iii) the extraordinary technical advancement in high P-T studies, which have been abetted by a vast improvement in computational methods. Using these new computational methods, such as first principles including ab initio models, calculations have been made for the electronic structure, bonding, thermal EOS, elasticity, melting, thermal conductivity and diffusivity. In this monograph, the boundaries of the definitions of a petrologist, geochemist, geophysicist or a mineralogist have been willfully eliminated to bring them all under the spectrum of "high-pressure geochemistry" when they deal with any material (quintessentially a chemical assemblage) - terrestrial or extraterrestrial - under the conditions of high-pressure and temperature. Thus, a petrologist using a spectrometer or any instrument for high-pressure studies of a rock or a mineral, or a geochemist using them for chemical synthesis and characterization, is better categorized as a "high-pressure geochemist" rather than any other kind of disciplinarian. The contents of this monograph bring together, under one cover, apparently disparate disciplines like solid-earth geophysics and geochemistry as well as material science and condensed-matter physics to present a thorough overview of high pressure geochemistry. Indeed, such interdisciplinary activities led to the discovery of new phenomena such as high P-T behaviour in metal oxides (e.g. Mott transition), novel transitions such as amorphization, changes in order-disorder in crystals and the anomalous properties of oxide melts.
