Ramiz Alkhishin, the authors alter ego, is a grocer. He has a passion for a life that is as independent as possible from its surroundings. To him the trendy place to be in is the one to avoid, while the traditional road to follow is the one to by-pass. He has already documented some of his thought-adventures in eight earlier books. The author, in his new book, The Whispering Molecules, listened to and recorded the whispers of a variety of inert composites. The result of this imaginary project was a series of forty six stand-alone story dialogues where these seemingly life-less objects express their human-like observations as they go about undertaking their designated tasks. The author hopes that through these dialectic scenes the reader can enjoy a trip where absolutes are banned and doubt is a constant companion. When questioned why he dislikes absolutes so much, Ramiz responded by reciting the following dialogue he had overheard: Glass: You seem confused. What happened to you? Water: What do you mean? Glass: You were clear and transparent but no more so. Water: I paid the price for being nave. Glass: How? Water: By thinking that a drop of ink is too small to affect me!

A “funny, relentless, haunting, and highly readable” novel about one man’s desperate gambling addiction (ForeWord Magazine). P is a school bus driver in Florida, and six month ago he won a hundred grand at the casino. What his wife and family don’t realize is that the money is long gone. To keep them fooled—and feed his ongoing compulsion—he indulges in bigger and bigger bets, scrounging for cash anywhere he can. Finally, faced with the ultimate financial crisis, he hits it really big. Yet winning, he soon learns, is just the beginning of a deeper problem . . . “Allen takes his place on a continuum that begins, perhaps, with Dostoyevsky’s Gambler, courses through Malcolm Lowry’s Under the Volcano, William S. Burroughs’s Junky, [and] the collected works of Charles Bukowski and Hubert Selby Jr. . . . colorfully evokes the gambling milieu.” —The New York Times Book Review “This is strongly recommended and deserves a wide audience; an excellent choice for book discussion groups.” —Library Journal

Korean Wild Geese Families: Gender, Family, Social, and Legal Dynamics of Middle-Class Asian Transnational Families in North America explores the experiences of middle-class Korean transnational families, whose mothers and children migrate abroad for children’s education while fathers remain in Korea and economically support their families, throughout transnational separation: before separation, during separation, and after reunification. It discusses the themes of (1) changes in wild geese parents’ relative gender statuses, housework patterns, and spousal relationships; (2) changes in mothering/fathering practices and intergenerational relationships; and (3) wild geese families’ settlement and integration in the host societies and re-adaptation to Korea after family reunification. Se Hwa Lee interviewed mothers in both the United States and Canada, as well as fathers in Korea, to compare the effects of immigration policies between the two countries in North America and present gender-balanced explanations. Se Hwa Lee also sheds light on Asian documented immigrants’ hardships and different degrees of empowerment and incorporation in the host societies according to legal status, employment, additional education, and co-ethnic community membership. This book offers readers valuable venues to enhance their understanding of increasingly diverse transnational families in North America.
