"Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) practices are essential for maintaining health, yet most countries and donors have not included WASH in national policies and programmes for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have begun to explore how to integrate WASH into HIV programming. In particular, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention developed and studied approaches to providing safe drinking water for people living with HIV. Since 2006, WHO and USAID have supported pioneering applications that have integrated WASH into HIV programmes in three countries--Ethiopia, Malawi and Uganda. In addition, USAID has promoted the integration of WASH into different United States Government HIV programmes through various working groups of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Response. Many different donors, organizations and programmes are now considering WASH when developing HIV policies and programmes, and are seeking more guidance on how to integrate WASH practices into their programmes. The purpose of this paper is to highlight discrete water, sanitation, and hygiene improvement activities that can be incorporated into HIV/AIDS programs in different settings to help mitigate the impact of diarrhea on PLWHA and their families-prolonging and improving the quality of life for PLWHA and protecting family members and caregivers from the debilitating effects of diarrhea on school atten. [...] Proper hand washing at critical times will help prolong and improve the quality of life of PLWHA and will help ensure the health and safety of family members and caregivers. [...] The following recommendations on how to integrate water, sanitation, and hygiene into HIV/AIDS programs were developed through extensive consultations with HIV/AIDS and water sector researchers and program implementers and a broad review of the literature from different sectors (HIV/AIDS, water and sanitation, and disability) conducted by USAID/HIP and the World Bank Water and Sanitation Program i. [...] Develop a comprehensive water, sanitation, and hygiene component to include in all care and support guidelines and training, including guidance and technologies on hand washing in water-scarce settings; critical times for hand washing and proper technique; soap substitutes; proper disposal of waste water; and proper use and maintenance of water and sanitation facilities; household water treatment. This paper seeks to draw attention to the significance of integrating hygiene practices to HIV and AIDs programs in Southern African Developing Countries (SADC),Äîa region severely burdened by the disease. Integrating hygiene, in particular the habit of handwashing with soap and water, can reduce mortality rates and improve the livelihoods of people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA),Äîakin to Florence Nightingale,Äôs moment (1850s). The paper uses survey data attained from PLWHA (South Africa) as case point to provide empirical views by PLWHA regarding their views and perceptions about hygiene practices and significance. Key observations are that: PLWHA lack sufficient knowledge on handwashing practices and apparently ignorant about their exposure and extent of vulnerability to opportunistic infections. This paper concludes by making a call for integration of hygiene (especially handwashing with soap and water) as part and parcel of HIV and AIDS programs as this will positively impact livelihoods of PLWHA in SADC.¬†The paper ends continuous monitoring of WASH programs across SADC new 90-90-90 water-sanitation-hygiene indicator scoreboard necessary for continuous monitoring of WASH programs across SADC and equally other developing countries.
