At 11 pm on Election Night, my little brother (and co-author) called me. I hesitated to pick up the phone because I knew what the call was about. When I answered he described the scene at his law school following Hillary Clinton's probable loss as one of total despair. Every pollster said this could not happen, but here we were - watching Donald Trump successfully pull off one of the biggest political upsets of all time. The next day reality sank in, and my brother and I were on the phone once again, but this time the conversation was different. We were discussing just how this happened, and researching whether there were examples in history that could explain this phenomenon. What we found is that results like the 2016 presidential election had happened before and at all levels of government from mayoral races to races for the White House. In our research and analysis we found there are many ways a politician can be upset by their opponent, such as not understanding their electorate properly, lack of data, or being outmaneuvered technology wise (failing to innovate). Ultimately, we discovered that there is no set way to win an election, but by not changing from past styles incumbents and new candidates alike guarantee an eventual loss. To demonstrate this point, we will walk through goat mayor Clay Henry's election, Jesse Ventura's rise to governorship, Barack Obama's election, Donald Trump's campaign points, an exclusive look into how the PAN took the Mexican state of Tamaulipas from the PRI written by the President of DIF Reynosa, and many other upset elections.

More than a half-century after the death of Kansas City's notorious political boss, Thomas J. Pendergast, the Pendergast name still evokes great interest and even controversy. Now, in this first full-scale biography of Pendergast, Lawrence H. Larsen and Nancy J. Hulston have successfully provided—through extensive research, including use of recently released prison records and previously unavailable family records—a clear look at the life of Thomas J. Pendergast. Born in St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1872, Tom Pendergast moved to Kansas City around 1890 to work for his brother James, founder of the Pendergast "Goat" faction in Kansas City Democratic politics. In 1911, Pendergast became head of the Goats, and over the next fifteen years he created a powerful political machine that used illegal voting and criminal enforcers to gain power. Following a change in the city charter in 1925, Pendergast took control of Kansas City and ran it as his own personal business. In the 1930s, he received over $30 million annually from gambling, prostitution, and narcotics, putting him in the big leagues of American civic corruption. He also wielded great power in the National Democratic Party and started Harry S. Truman on the road to the presidency. In this well-balanced biography, the authors examine Pendergast's rise to power, his successes as a political leader, his compassion for the destitute, and his reputation for keeping his word. They also examine Pendergast's character development and how his methods became more and more ruthless. Pendergast had no use for ideology in his "invisible government"—only votes counted. In 1937 and 1938 the federal government broke the back of Pendergast's machine, convicting 259 of his campaign aides for vote fraud. In 1939 Pendergast, who was believed to be the largest bettor on horse racing in the United States, was jailed for income tax evasion, and he died in disgrace in 1945. An insightful and comprehensive biography, Pendergast! will surely serve for years to come as the most thorough investigation of the life and infamous career of Tom Pendergast.

Passionate Crusaders tells the gripping story of a few righteous Americans who sought to do what many thought impossible in 1944-save Jews who had not yet been murdered in the Holocaust. By January 1944, Treasury Department officials Henry Morgenthau, John Pehle, and Josiah DuBois had already convinced President Franklin Roosevelt to create the War Refugee Board, an agency with the authority to provide rescue and relief for Jews and other groups persecuted by the Nazis. Scholars have criticized the Board for its inability to save more Jews and maintained that the agency should have been created sooner. Heather Voight's groundbreaking research proves that despite its shortcomings, the War Refugee Board changed history and forever altered American foreign policy. Its creation ended the cycle of indifference that the government and the American public had shown to victims of the Holocaust. In the words of Henry Morgenthau, from 1944-1945 "crusaders, passionately persuaded of the need for speed and action" risked their reputations and sometimes their lives to save Jews. In addition to saving more than 100,000 lives, Board members also made a lasting impact on international law. They pressured the War Crimes Commission to broaden its definition of war crimes by including the murder of civilians by their own countrymen. This new definition of war crimes was applied to genocides committed many decades later in Bosnia and Rwanda, and continues to be used today. "[Passionate Crusaders] shows that the efforts of an honorable and courageous few can create small steps to change history. This detailed, well-told, and inspiring story will be of value to students of the Holocaust, American history, and human rights." -From the Foreword by Dr. Leon Stein, Professor Emeritus of History and Education Director Emeritus, Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center.
