Excerpt from Hoffmann's Fairy Tales These charming Stories of hoffmann, the popular story-teller of Germany, are translated from a French version entitled Contes Fantastiques. The reason why it was thought proper to give them through this language, rather than direct from the German, is, that the French possesses, in a greater degree, the ease necessary to amusing narrations, and corrects the terse ness of the harsher Teutonic. The translator begs the same favorable reception for this second work that was given to the Strange Stories, issued a year ago, by the same Publishers. Excerpt from Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales Long ago, when wishes often came true, there lived a King Whose daughters were all handsome, but the youngest was so beautiful that the sun himself, who has seen everything, was bemused every time he shone over her because of her beauty. Near the royal castle there was a great dark wood, and in the wood under an old linden tree was a well; and when the day was hot, the Kings daughter used to go forth into the wood and sit by the brink of the cool well, and if the time seemed long, she would take out a golden ball, and throw it up and catch it again, and this was her favorite pastime. Now it happened one day that the golden ball, instead of falling back into the maiden's little hand which had sent it aloft, dropped to the ground near the edge of the well and rolled in. The King's daughter followed it with her eyes as it sank, but the well was deep, so deep that the bottom could not be seen. Then she began to weep, and she wept and wept as if she could never be comforted. And in the midst of her weeping she heard a voice saying to her, What ails you, King' 3 daughter? Your tears would melt a heart of stone. And when she looked to see where the voice came from, there was nothing but a frog stretching his thick ugly head out of the water. Oh, is it you, old waddler? Said she; I weep because my golden ball has fallen into the well. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales The Hans Andersen' Fairy Tales will be read in schools and homes as long as there are children who love to read. As a story-teller for children the author has no rival in power to enlist the imagi nation and carry it along natural, healthful lines. The power of his tales to charm and elevate runs like a living thread through whatever he writes. In the two books in which they are here presented they have met the tests and held an undiminish ing popularity among the best children's books. They are recognized as standards, and as juvenile writings come to be more carefully standardized, their place in permanent literature will grow wider and more secure. A few children's authors will be ranked among the Immortals, and Hans Andersen is one of them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
