Events of great importance, however, were happening all around, and from three directions three lines of adventure and conquest were converging towards this great natural focus. In September of that year Hudson sailed up the river which has since received his name, to the site of AI bany, and took possession of the country round about in the name of his employers, the Dutch East India Com pany, and of the States General of Holland. That people in a few years established several trading-posts along the Hud son, and in 1623 began the work of permanent colonization.
