G., for 21 years, in which regiment he was promoted from private through the different grades to Colonel, which office he held for ten years. On the outbreak of the Civil War he organized the famous Duryee Zouaves, sth. N. Y. Vols., and was soon afterwards promoted to brigadier-general, and then to Major General.
