Excerpt from History of Medicine and Surgery and Physicians and Surgeons of Chicago It will be noted that the manner of presenting the biographies of physi eiaus and surgeons of the past differs from the usual, or formal, style of biography, especially in the leads to the articles. Instead of always giving the place and date of birth in the initial paragraph, followed by a record of the life in chronological order, an attempt has been made to call to the reader's attention at the outset the outstanding features in each career and to limit the record of the life to actual facts. It is hoped that this change will not be unwelcome. The arrangement of the historical sections is in chronological order. The biographies of physicians and surgeons, following those of the surgeons of Fort Dearborn, which appear in the order of their service, are arranged ac cording to the dates of birth. The histories of medical colleges, hospitals and medical societies are printed, in their respective sections, in the order of their organization. Excerpt from A Group of Distinguished Physicians and Surgeons of Chicago: A Collection of Biographical Sketches of Many of the Eminent Representatives, Past and Present, of the Medical Profession of Chicago In considering the character and career of this eminent member of the medical faculty, the impartial observer will be disposed to rank him not only among the most distinguished members of his profession, but also as one of those men of broad culture and genuine benevolence who do honor to man kind at large. In overcoming Obstacles, he has exhibited patience and per sistence; through a long and busy life he has known none but worthy motives; to the practice Of his profession he has brought rare skill and inventive resource; while in the imparting of instruction, whether through his pen or in the class room, he has shown profound aptness. Such qualities as these stamp him as a man of genius, and entitle him to be classed with the benefactors of mankind. Dr. Davis was born on January 9, 1817, in a rude cabin of logs, erected by his father, Dow Davis, among the primitive forests of Chenango county, New York, of which his parents were pioneer settlers. He was the young est of a family of seven children, and was deprived of 'a mother's care at the tender age of seven years, Mrs. Davis, whose maiden name was Eleanor Smith, having died in 1824. His father lived to attain the extraordinary age of ninety years, and died upon the farm which he had reclaimed from the giants Of the forest. Excerpt from The Physicians and Surgeons of the United States As it was simply impossible to extend it to the entire membership Of the profession, after careful consideration, it was determined to confine it to those who by their work had brought themselves more or less prominently to notice. The selections were made to include all professors, 'hospital physicians and surgeons, Officers of the more important medical societies and authors, together with those who by length Of service Or success in the profession had become of eminence. No effort or expense has. Been spared to secure complete sketches, and Where any appear incomplete, or are absent, the fault does not lie with-the editor or publisher. We therefore do not claim that the book is complete, but We, do claim that it is an earnest effort to supply the profession with a complete review of the real workers in the profession, and of the work they have done for it. There were a very few who blindly adhered to a prejudice. Against the publication of biographies of the living to these, we believe the book in its matter and manner is a complete reply. Once upon a time, specifically ranging from 1866 until the end of the 1950s, almost all of the attending staff at Cook County Hospital (CCH)-and thus the instructors who prepared physicians for their roles in the world-were unpaid volunteers. In all large public teaching hospitals, like CCH, appointment to the staff was both an honor and public recognition of the appointee's status, his or her reputation among his or her peers. Prior to the advent of all-fulltime salaried positions in the 1970s and 1980s, nearly all of the attending staff were non-paid volunteers. Consequently, for all of CCH history up to that point, the list of surgical faculty is a virtual "Who's Who" of Chicago surgeons. This book examines the development of the medical disciplines that historically fell under the aegis of the department of surgery at CCH and other similar institutions. The individuals who taught successive new generations of surgeons were not necessarily famed in their time. Already respected, however, they gained legendary status as their former students realized just how effectively these men had taught them. From relevant anecdotes about individual interactions with these instructors to a collection of "quotable quotes" and historical vignettes and personal experiences from physicians and nurses, this books looks at a unique time and collection of individuals who conspired to achieve something remarkable. It is more than a history of a building on Chicago's west side-it is an inside look at the people who made Cook County Hospital a center of top-flight medical education and world-class care through the years.

Excerpt from Fifty Years a Surgeon Paré in the preface to his work on surgery in 1582 said in effect that, excepting unimportant details, nothing more was to be added to the science and art of surgery. Just three hundred years later Dr. Samuel D. Gross as president of the American Surgical Society made a similar statement: All avenues of approach to surgery have been investigated. Nothing was left for surgeons of the future beyond acquiring what was already known and perfecting their technic. Since the time of these schoolgirl prophecies made by the greatest men of their day, two lively young eras in surgery have dashed up the steps, pressed a button and turned the light on things about which Paré or Gross had not even dreamed. Were I to return to Earth fifty years from now, bring ing back my present stock of knowledge, doctors would not understand my language nor would I catch the drift of their conversation at medical society meetings. In this book, reference to appendicitis preponderates, out of proportion to the importance of this subject in sur gery. I have used it as a sort of text, because I happened to be among the first surgeons to enter into a thorough investigation of the subject, and it then came to include much of my practice.
