It lies in the extreme western portion of the state along the Ohio State line. Settlers started arriving around 1785 and were almost exclusively Scotch-Irish Presbyterians. This book is broken down into two sections. The first is a history of the county with such topics as: first settlers / pioneers, Indians, formation of townships, the French and the English Claims of the Ohio Valley, Medicine, Education, Religion, Newspapers, Civil War, Legal system, Roster of troops in the War of 1812 and the Mexican War. The second is a biographical sketch section of approximately 1,010 persons with a New Index that was produced for this reprint which mentions approximately 26,000 persons.
