The 1st Alabama Cavalry (Beall's) Battalion was consolidated with the 2nd Mississippi and Alabama Cavalry (Brewer's) Battalion and Co. "K," 2nd Mississippi Infantry Battalion; redesignated 8th Confederate Cavalry (Wade's) Regiment in May 1862. The 8th Confederate Cavalry Regiment was made up of men from Alabama and Mississippi. It was also known as the 2nd Regiment, Mississippi & Alabama Cavalry and Pope Walker Battalion Mississippi Cavalry. Formerly: Beall's Battalion, Alabama Cavalry, Brewer's Battalion Alabama Cavalry Mississippi 4th Cavalry Battalion (Baskerville's). In records of the Battle of Shiloh it is called "Alabama and Mississippi Battalion Confederate Cavalry." Previous to that it was called "Pope Walker Battalion Mississippi Cavalry," and even then contained at least one Alabama company...that of the McCaa Rangers from Pickens County. The regiment fought at Shiloh, Blackland, Murfreesboro, Shelbyville, Chickamauga, protracted engagement near Dalton on May 1864, Dalton/ Atlanta campaign, Jonesboro, Stoneman's Raid, Wheelers raid into Tennessee, Saltville, Montgomery during Wilsons Alabama Raid, and the pursuit of Sherman into the Carolinas. The regiment was split in 1864 explaining what appears to be a conflict...all companies except F, G, and H are found on the list of parolees in North Carolina. The Kentucky 8th Cavalry Regiment was formed during the late summer of 1862 and mustered into Confederate service in September. The unit fought in Kentucky, then rode with J.H. Morgan. Most of the men were captured at Buffington Island on July 19 and a remnant at New Lisbon on July 26, 1863. The 8th was not reorganized. Following Gen. Morgan's death the men of the 8th who had not been captured were merged with the KY 12th Cavalry Regiment to form the KY 8th/12th Consolidated Cavalry Regiment.

The Alabama 8th (Hatch's) Cavalry Regiment was organized at Newbern, Alabama, in April, 1864, by adding one company to the nine of Hatch's Battalion that had entered Confederate service the previous winter. The men were form Sumter, Dallas, Tuscaloosa, Greene, Marengo, Choctaw, and Fayette counties. It joined General Pillow at Blue Mountain, then was assigned to C. G. Armistead's Brigade, Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. The 8th moved into north Georgia and was engaged in the desperate encounter at Lafayette, with a loss of 30 killed and wounded and about 75 prisoners. Shortly after, the Eighth fought at Rome, losing about 20 men killed and wounded. It was ordered to west Florida soon after, and was in front of Steele as he moved on Pollard. In December, on receiving news of a Federal expedition from Pensacola to Pollard, Ala., Colonel Armistead moved his brigade to Bluff Springs, a march of 150 miles in fifty-four hours, and pursued the expedition on its return, December 16-17, General McKean, commanding at Pensacola, reported that "considerable severe fighting took place at all the streams from the Little Escambia to Pine Barren Creek." Colonel Robinson, commanding the expedition, was severely wounded, and in his troops 17 killed and 64 wounded. The 8th surrendered at Gainesville, Florida in late May, 1865. The 8th Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry (Union) was organized August, 1863, by consolidation of 5 Companies organized at Camp Nelson, Ky., June 30 to August 14, 1863, for 10th Tennessee Cavalry which failed to complete organization, and 7 Companies organized in Tennessee at large for the 5th East Tennessee Cavalry. There was another 10th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment formed under the command of Col. George W. Bridges. The regiment fought throughout the war in East Tennessee and western Virginia. They were responsible for the destruction of the Confederate Salt Works at Saltville, Virginia. At the end of the war they were sent in pursuit of the Confederate President Jefferson Davis. They may have been part of the Union troops involved in the disappearance of the Confederate Gold at Washington, GA, but there is no record that they were present at the capture of President Davis. The Ohio 8th Cavalry Regiment, formerly the 44th infantry, was organized as a veteran cavalry regiment by order of the secretary of war. Its designation was changed to the 8th Ohio volunteer cavalry in January, 1864. The Regiment organized and trained at Camp Dennison, Ohio, January to May, 1864. Six Companies moved to Charleston, W. Va., April 26 and the balance of Regiment on May 8, 1864. The regiment, composed of veterans and recruits, was retained in service until July 30, 1865, when it was mustered out in accordance with orders from the war department.

The Tennessee 8th (Baxter Smith's) Cavalry Regiment, usually called 4th Regiment, was organized in November, 1862, but annulled. Reorganized January 23, 1863, by consolidating Davis' Tennessee Cavalry Battalion and four companies from Murray's Cavalry Regiment, its ten companies contained men recruited in the counties of Marshall, Sullivan, Smith, Wilson, Cannon, Rutherford, Hamilton, Fentress, Davidson, DeKalb, and Sumner. Another company was added in August with men from Knox and Blount counties. The regiment served in Wharton's, Biffle's, Dibrell's, and T. Harrison's Brigade. After Murfreesboro the 8th fought at Chickamauga and the Atlanta Campaign. They were in central Tennessee in the late fall of 1864, then in South Carolina by mid Febuary, 1865 to participate in the Battle of Aiken. They ended the war in North Carolina, surrendering with Johnston's army. The 10th Confederate Cavalry Regiment was organized at Murfreesboro, by consolidating the battalions of Col. Charles T. Goode and Lt. Col. M. N. Slaughter--the latter being the cavalry of Hilliard's Legion, which had passed through the Kentucky campaign. The unit suffered greatly at Jimtown, Resaca, Dalton, and New Hope Church and saw arduous service throughout the Atlanta Campaign. Following the fall of Atlanta they participated in the raid into Saltville, Virginia before returning to South Carolina in January of 1865 in time to participate in the Battle of Aiken. The Michigan 8th Cavalry Regiment was organized at Mt. Clemens, Michigan, December 30, 1862 to May 2, 1863. Early in the war they had the distinction of being the unit who captured Confederate General John Hunt Morgan and his men. They later participated in the Atlanta Campaign and were a part of the ill-fated Stoneman's Raid to Macon, Ga. Though most of the men escaped when Stoneman was captured, they were surprised and severely beaten at Eatonton, GA. More than 50 of the men who were captured later died in Andersonville Prison. Those who survived continued in the Nashville Campaign and ended the war there doing scouting duty until September, 1865.
