Supercapacitors are a relatively new energy storage system that provides higher energy density than dielectric capacitors and higher power density than batteries. They are particularly suited to applications that require energy pulses during short periods of time, e.g., seconds or tens of seconds. They are recommended for automobiles, tramways, buses, cranes, fork-lifts, wind turbines, electricity load leveling in stationary and transportation systems, etc. Despite the technological maturity of supercapacitors, there is a lack of comprehensive literature on the topic. Many high performance materials have been developed and new scientific concepts have been introduced. Taking into account the commercial interest in these systems and the new scientific and technological developments now is the ideal time to publish this book, capturing all this new knowledge. The book starts by giving an introduction to the general principles of electrochemistry, the properties of electrochemical capacitors, and electrochemical characterization techniques. Electrical double layer capacitors and pseudocapacitors are then discussed, followed by the various electrolyte systems. Modelling, manufacture of industrial capacitors, constraints, testing, and reliability as well as applications are also covered. 'Supercapacitors - Materials, Systems, and Applications' is part of the series on Materials for Sustainable Energy and Development edited by Prof. G.Q. Max Lu. The series covers advances in materials science and innovation for renewable energy, clean use of fossil energy, and greenhouse gas mitigation and associated environmental technologies.

Although recognized as an important component of all energy storage and conversion technologies, electrochemical supercapacitators (ES) still face development challenges in order to reach their full potential. A thorough examination of development in the technology during the past decade, Electrochemical Supercapacitors for Energy Storage and Delivery: Fundamentals and Applications provides a comprehensive introduction to the ES from technical and practical aspects and crystallization of the technology, detailing the basics of ES as well as its components and characterization techniques. The book illuminates the practical aspects of understanding and applying the technology within the industry and provides sufficient technical detail of newer materials being developed by experts in the field which may surface in the future. The book discusses the technical challenges and the practical limitations and their associated parameters in ES technology. It also covers the structure and options for device packaging and materials choices such as electrode materials, electrolyte, current collector, and sealants based on comparison of available data. Supplying an in depth understanding of the components, design, and characterization of electrochemical supercapacitors, the book has wide-ranging appeal to industry experts and those new to the field. It can be used as a reference to apply to current work and a resource to foster ideas for new devices that will further the technology as it becomes a larger part of main stream energy storage.

Energy Storage Systems theme is a component of Encyclopedia of Energy Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources which is part of the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. The Theme is organized into six different topics which represent the main scientific areas of the theme: The first topic, Rationale of Energy Storage and Supply/Demand Matching is devoted to the discussion of essential concepts and the most important aspects of the optimization, establishment and operation of energy storage systems based on six cases as examples. The succeeding four topics are Storage of Thermal Energy; Mechanical Energy Storage; Storage of Electrical Energy; Storage of Chemical Energy and Nuclear Materials. Each of these consists of a topic chapter emphasizing the general aspects and various subject articles explaining the back ground, theory and practice of a specific type of energy storage of that topic. The last topic is transport of energy with emphasis on hydrogen as future energy carrier. It contains detailed review of other modes of energy transport and discussion of environmental effects. Fundamentals and applications of characteristic methods are presented in these volumes. These two volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College Students, Educators, Professional Practitioners, Research Personnel and Policy Analysts, Managers, and Decision Makers and NGOs.

Electric power systems are experiencing dramatic changes in operational requirements as a result of deregulation. Continuing electric load growth and higher regional power transfers in a largely interconnected network lead to complex and less secure power system operation. Power generation and transmission facilities have not been able to grow to meet these new demands as a result of economic, environmental, technical, and governmental regulation constraints. At the same time, the growth of electronic loads has made the quality of power supply a critical issue. Power system engineers facing these challenges seek solutions to allow them to operate the system in a more flexible, controllable manner. When power system disturbances occur, synchronous generators are not always able to respond rapidly enough to keep the system stable. If high-speed real or reactive power control is available, load shedding or generator dropping may be avoided during the disturbance. High speed reactive power control is possible through the use of flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS) devices. In a few cases, these devices are also able to provide some measure of high speed real power control through power circulation within the converter, with the real power coming from the same line or in some cases from adjacent lines leaving the same substation. However, a better solution would be to have the ability to rapidly vary real power without impacting the system through power circulation.

Recent developments in microelectronics technologies have created a great demand for interlayer dielectric materials with a very low dielectric constant. They will play a crucial role in the future generation of IC devices (VLSI/UISI and high speed IC packaging). Considerable efforts have been made to develop new low as well as high dielectric constant materials for applications in electronics industries. Besides achieving either low or high dielectric constants, other materials' properties such as good processability, high mechanical strength, high thermal and environmental stability, low thermal expansion, low current leakage, low moisture absorption, corrosion resistant, etc., are of equal importance. Many chemical and physical strategies have been employed to get desired dielectric materials with high performance. This is a rapidly growing field of science--both in novel materials and their applications to future packing technologies. The experimental data on inorganic and organic materials having low or high dielectric constant remail scattered in the literature. It is timely, therfore, to consolidate the current knowledge on low and high dielectric constant materials into a sigle reference source. Handbook of Low and High Dielectric Constant Materials and Their Applications is aimed at bringing together under a sigle cover (in two volumes) all low and high dielectric constant materials currently studied in academic and industrial research covering all spects of inorgani an organic materials from their synthetic chemistry, processing techniques, physics, structure-property relationship to applications in IC devices. This book will summarize the current status of the field covering important scientific developments made over the past decade with contributions from internationally recognized experts from all over the world. Fully cross-referenced, this book has clear, precise, and wide appeal as an essential reference source for all those interested in low and high dielectric constant material.
