Excerpt from The Religious Life of King Henry ViF ew people, who have taken their notions Of this period of time from our modern school histories, will be disposed to think otherwise of this unfortunate monarch. There is, how ever, another side to this matter: that is, so far as his personal qualities are concerned, at one time, and for a long period of time, Henry VI was recognized and revered gener ally as one of the glories of the Kingdom. He was known in faet as the national saint of the country.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Third Part of King Henry the Sixth I shall now leave the opinions of others and summarise my examination of the text, or texts, before us; and proceed at once to look for evidence of those other coadjutors, Peele, Marlowe and Greene, merely premising that there is much less of any writer (other than Shakespeare) in Part III., as well as in its foundation play, than was the case in Part II. And its early form. In T he True Tragedy I see a little of Marlowe, less of Greene, more of Peele and much more of Shakespeare. And in the final play there is yet more of Shakespeare and yet less of the others. Whatever may have been the original plan, the committee seems to have dissolved and left him in possession, with Peele to advise. Excerpt from The Second Part of King Henry the Sixth: Edited by H. C. Hart The text of 2 Henry VI. as here presented, is that of the first Folio (1623); with a few very slight, but not unimportant emendations due to the play on which it is founded: The - First Part of The Con - tention betwixt the Two Famous Houses of Yorke - and Lancaster, with the death of the good - Duke Humphrey: - And the banishment and death of the Duke of - Suffolke, and the tragicall end of the proud Cardinal] - of Winchester, with the notable Rebellion - of Iacke Cade: - And the Duke of Yorkes first claime unto the j Crowne. T. C.'s device and motto] London. Printed by Thomas Creed, for Thomas Millington, - and arc to be sold at his shop under Saint Peters - church in Cornwall - 1594. - As I have collated the Contention (Q 1) into the Folio text, collation with the late Folios became impossible. It is, however, needless, and in the very few instances where an interesting reading arises from the later Folios it is noticed in the notes, or intended to be so. A second edition of the Quarto appeared in 1600, "Printed by Valentine Simms for Thomas Millington." Otherwise the titles are the same. This is a careless reprint of the first edition with unimportant variations. A third edition (Q 3) appeared, undated, in 1619. It was printed by Isaac Jeffard, and included The True Tragedy of Richard, Duke of York. It was titled: The - Whole Contention - betweene the two Famous - Houses, Lancaster and - Yorkc. - With the tragicall ends of the good Duke - Humfrey, Richard Duke of Yorke, - and King Henrie the - Sixt. j Divided into two parts: And newly corrected and - enlarged. Written by William Shakespeare, Gent. - Printed at London for T P. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Authorship of the Second and Third Parts of "King Henry Vi" It is doubtless true that the question of Shakespeare's concern in the Henry VI plays possesses considerably higher importance than any other which arises in this connexion. It seems clear, however, that this question can be adequately discussed only after definite knowledge has been attained regarding the origin and general charac ter of the plays upon which Shakespeare based his work. In the following treatment, therefore, I purpose first to consider in detail the authorship and dramatic structure of the plays which Shake speare received as his sources - namely, the Contention and the True Tragedy; and then, on the basis of what may thus be ascertained, to attempt an investigation of the extent and nature of the altera tions introduced by Shakespeare. It is hoped that some light may thus be thrown upon the character of Shakespeare's style and method during his earliest dramatic period.
