Helicobacter pylori is an universally distributed bacterium which affects more than half of the world population. H. pylori infection causes persistent inflammation with different clinical outcomes in humans, including chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer. The infection has also been associated with several extradigestive disorders. In this book there is a comprehensive overview of contributors on H. pylori infection in diverse areas, including virulence factors of H. pylori and their importance for the clinical outcome of the diseases, discussions about the principal therapeutic regimens of bacterium eradication, also considering the antimicrobial resistance. H. pylori is clearly a very interesting bacteria and great studies and discussions about all its aspects are welcome to the medical and scientific communities.

Vascular Responses to Pathogens focuses on the growing research from leaders in the field for both the short and long-term impact of pathogens on the vasculature. It discusses various organisms, including bacteria, parasites, and viruses, and their role in key events leading to vascular disease. Formatted to discuss the topic of the interaction of pathogens with the vascular rather than individual diseases described separately, this reference demonstrates that common mechanisms are at play in many different diseases because they have a similar context, their vasculature. This all-inclusive reference book is a must-have tool for researchers and practicing clinicians in the areas of vascular biology, microvasculature, cardiology, and infectious disease. Covers a wide spectrum of organisms and provides analysis of pathogens and current therapeutic strategies in the context of their vasculature Provides detailed perspectives on key components contributing to vascular pathogens from leaders in the field Interfaces between both vascular biology and microbiology by encompassing information on how pathogens affect both macro and microvasculature Includes coverage of the clinical aspects of sepsis and current therapeutic strategies and anti-sepsis drugs

This book provides the current updated knowledge on all essential aspects in the rapidly evolving area of Helicobacter pylori research. H. pylori is a class I carcinogen and one of the most common infections in the world. While most people colonized by H. pylori will remain asymptomatic, up to 20 % of them may develop serious gastroduodenal disease such as peptic ulcers or gastric cancer. H. pylori is the only known bacterium linked to the development of cancer and consequently is an important focus of research. Outstanding international experts from diverse scientific disciplines contribute here to give detailed insights into the current understanding concerning the physiology and role of this pathogen. Both basic science and clinical research with actual practical consequences are taken into account. The chapters target microbiology, epidemiology, genetics, biochemistry, interactions with the immune system, signal transduction, pathogenic mechanisms in the gastroduodenal mucosa, gastric disease development, and therapy including antibiotics or probiotics treatment as well as vaccination strategies. This book is an important reference not only for clinicians but also microbiologists. It provides in a single volume an up-to-date summary of our current knowledge of this microbe and the multiple ways in which it impacts upon public health in all parts of the world.

This e-book covers Helicobacter pylori research as it looks in 2014. The discovery of the bacterium in 1982 by B.J. Marshall and R. I. Warren had a tremendous impact on basic research and clinical medicine, resulting, in the past 3 decades, in more than 34,000 published articles. The editor of this volume and the contributing authors have compiled a unique collection of chapters dealing the with the microbiology, epidemiology, clinical diagnosis and treatment of H. pylori infections in a country-specific manner, with contributors having the opportunity to present the peculiarities and specifics of Helicobacter research in their area or country without overlapping any other previously published e-book. This e-book is a useful reference for gastrointestinal physicians and medical researchers seeking the latest information related to H. pylori.

The impact of Helicobacter pylori on basic science and the clinical management of patients with the complications of this infection is bewildering. The explosion of new information both in the laboratory and at the bedside has progressed at an unprecedented rate. Our main objective in furthering this progress has been to integrate this new information and organize a series of top-quality presentations and discussions between investigators and clinicians on all aspects of H. pylori research and to review the current position and future research directions. To that end, the second meeting 'Helicobacter pylori: Basic Mechanisms to Clinical Cure' was organized in June 1996 in Ottawa, Canada, following the successful format of the first such meeting held in Amelia Island, Florida, in 1993. The meeting again focused on all timely aspects of H. pylori research. Internationally renowned basic and clinical scientists, all experts in their respective fields, explored in depth the spectrum of H. pylori infection and the related complications of gastritis, peptic ulcer, gastric cancer and lymphoma.

There are few areas in medical science where the information explosion exceeds the capacity for a busy clinician to keep up to date. One such area is Helicobacter pylori. Since the first paper identifying H. pylori was published in 1983, great progress has occurred concerning H. pylori and its causal relationship to gastritis, duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer and gastric cancer. In a field which is moving so fast, a lot of new information is continuously reported at medical meetings, often published only in abstract form, without further appearing in peer-reviewed journals. Even gastroenterologists, unless actively involved in the field of H. pylori research themselves, find it difficult to keep abreast of the field. Although several volumes and monographs have appeared on H. pylori, this book is the only one entirely devoted to the clinical pharmacology and therapy of the Helicobacter infection. It is clear that the real-world indications for H. pylori treatment are being broadened, and it is impossible to turn back the tide of prescribing by primary care physicians or gastroenterologists. Some effective and safe eradication regimens are available today but several new ones, often simple variations of an old scheme, are being proposed as equally effective and safe. This volume, which covers the treatment of all the H. pylori-related digestive diseases as well as the management of treatment failure and reinfection, will be a valuable reference text for all those physicians who pursue the cure of this common human infection.

A century ago the Italian pathologist Bizzozero described the relationships between spiral bacteria and the mammalian gastro intestinal tract. Since 1982, when Helicobacter pylori was discovered, gastroduodenal disease have been completely revised as a con sequence of the results of basic and clinical research in this field. Progress in understanding the pathogenesis of this bacterium has been made by studying H. pylori infection in animal models. More specific diagnostic tools have been developed using new molecular biology techniques. Future trends are directed towards preparing a specific H. pylori vaccine. A new classification for gastritis, the Sydney System, including H. pylori gastritis, was proposed in 1990. As concerns the clinical approach to peptic ulcer disease in the 1990's, the majority of authors agree on the importance of H. pylori eradication. Moreover, recent clinical studies suggest that H. pylori infection can be associated with other gastroduodenal diseases, such as non ulcer dyspepsia and gastric cancer. Multicenter trials to standardize serological methods and evaluate the efficacy of new antimicrobial therapy schedules are planned throughout different European countries. The fourth Workshop of the European Helicobacter Pylori Study Group was held in Bologna, Italy, in November 1991. Two years before Bologna University celebrated its ninth centennial, giving evidence of being the oldest University in the modern world. Thus the H. pylori story that has continued for more than a century has been discussed once again at the University with the oldest tradition in the world.
