This book applies Heidegger’s writings to experimental fictions and film genres in order to study a being-there that performs itself beyond liveness and a future that is already here. Theatrical mise-en-scène is analyzed as a way of modeling the Heideggerian ontological-existential, exchanging a deeper presencing for the fictional “now” of liveness. The book is organized around ostensible objects that are in fact things-as-such and performs its theme via time-traveling, interruptions, decompositions, incompleteness, failure, geometric patterning, and above all black pages first cited in Tristram Shandy. The recent publication of the Black Notebooks volumes from the war years have sparked international controversy. Ponderings II–VI begins the much-anticipated English translation of Martin Heidegger's "Black Notebooks." Lectures on ecstatic temporality and on Heideggers political legacy. In Ecstasy, Catastrophe, David Farrell Krell provides insight into two areas of Heideggers thought: his analysis of ecstatic temporality in Being and Time (1927)and his political remarks in the recently published Black Notebooks (19311941). The first part of Krells book focuses on Heideggers interpretation of time, which Krell takes to be one of Heideggers greatest philosophical achievements. In addition to providing detailed commentary on ecstatic temporality, Krell considers Derridas analysis of ekstasis in his first seminar on Heidegger, taught in Paris in 19641965. Krell also relates ecstatic temporality to the work of other philosophers, including Aristotle, Augustine, Kant, Schelling, Hölderlin, and Merleau-Ponty; he then analyzes Dasein as infant and child, relating ecstatic temporality to the mirror stage theory of Jacques Lacan. The second part of the book turns to Heideggers Black Notebooks, which have received a great deal of critical attention in the press and in philosophical circles. Notorious for their pejorative references to Jews and Jewish culture, the Notebooks exhibit a level of polemic throughout that Krell takes to be catastrophic in and for Heideggers thought. Heideggers legacy therefore seems to be split between the best and the worst of thinkingsomewhere between ecstasy and catastrophe. Based on the 2014 Brauer Lectures in German Studies at Brown University, the book communicates the fruits of Krells many years of work on Heidegger in an engaging and accessible style.

Ponderings XII–XV is third in a series of four "Black Notebooks" which Martin Heidegger composed in the early years of World War II. As always with Heidegger, the thoughts expressed here are not superficial reflections on current events, but instead penetrate deeply into them in order to contemplate their historical importance. Throughout his ponderings, Heidegger meditates on the call for an antidote to the rampant technological attitude which views all things with a dismissive consumer mentality. Although this volume caused quite a scandal when originally published in German due to references to World-Judaism, English readers with access to the full text can now judge for themselves what Heidegger means in his use of that term. In style, this notebook is less aphoristic and more sustained than the previous ones, but remains probing, challenging, and fascinating.
