Excerpt from Memories of Hawaii and Hawaiian Correspondence Written May, 1877, when the Hawaiian Embassy visited Boston.) HE who has never enjoyed the luxury of a few months' quiet life in the tropics knows not one of the most exquisite of the joys of the senses. It is well described in the poem of the Lotus Eaters, by Tennyson, but any pen would fail in the attempt to paint a delight where sense and spirit are so commingled. And of all tropical residences, Honolulu, at least for an American, has by far the most in its favor. Twenty years ago, when I entered its harbor, there was no hotel for the stranger; but then, however, there was no stranger, simply because the Americans there opened their doors to each new arrival, and in some way he was soon among friends. The advent of those of that blood into colder climes recalls to me many characters and events of that delightful little island kingdom. I was first taken in charge by Dr. Damon, the seaman's preacher, one of those rare souls who can always speak the truth in kindness, and who consequently, for about half a century, simply lived in love toward God and man, making nought but friends -among the contending elements that the delicious trade-winds brought to those shores. Excerpt from Hawaii Nei The Old island life is fading like a wraith. Faint mists of it still linger about the mountains, in nooks and vales where Caucasian feet have not left too many hob-nailed tracks. The emigrant and the tourist improve few lands, and the old savagery and its calm content are but memories. Excerpt from Reminiscences of Old Hawaii Alexander's History, written for public school purposes, the best Hawaiian history now available, is necessarily condensed. Other books bearing upon various phases of Hawaiian life, were issued in limited editions, and moreover, are mostly out of print. Under these circumstances, it has been suggested to the writer that the best method of meeting the present public desire for information is to collect and publish the personal memoirs, reminiscences and writings of some of the older residents of Hawaii, who, through observation, were able to give first hand evidence of what they saw; or through contact with those living, were able to record the traditions and evidence of what had previously transpired.
