Journey through the beautiful countryside of Scotland, and it won't be long before you find a castle or grand manor house. From the fully restored magnificent homes and hotels to the decaying ruins, each one has it's own unique history. With so many originally built for protection in far more violent times than today, it is not unusual to discover that behind the visually stunning exteriors can lie a dark and sinister past and the terrifying acts of cruelty that were carried out within the walls have resulted in tales of hauntings. In this book the author explores a selection of these castles and manors, giving details of the reported ghostly happenings and the history of the property which helps explain why they are reputedly haunted. Compelling period fiction for 9+ readers from the Waterstones Children's Prize shortlisted Helen Peters. Evie couldn't be angrier with her mother. She's only gone and got married again and has flown off on honeymoon, sending Evie to stay with a godmother she's never even met in an old, creaky house in the middle of nowhere. It is all monumentally unfair. But on the first night, Evie sees a strange, ghostly figure at the window. Spooked, she flees from the room, feeling oddly disembodied as she does so. Out in the corridor, it's 1814 and Evie finds herself dressed as a housemaid. She's certain she's gone back in time for a reason. A terrible injustice needs to be fixed. But there's a housekeeper barking orders, a bad-tempered master to avoid, and the chamber pots won't empty themselves. It's going to take all Evie's cunning to fix things in the past so that nothing will break apart in the future... Absorbing, brilliant storytelling from the author of The Secret Hen House Theatre, The Farm Beneath the Water, Anna at War and The Jasmine Green Series for younger readers.

Ancient places such as castles are filled with histories, sometimes bloody and gruesome, but always fascinating. And the 11 dark places explored in this title are sure to chill young readers’ imaginations. For example, at Chillingham Castle in England, they’ll meet John Sage, who tortured up to 50 prisoners a week. He had a tilted floor in his torture chamber, so the victims’ blood could easily drain away. John boiled some prisoners in pots and locked others away in cages with starving rats. This nonfiction narrative of evil deeds and unfortunate incidents in ancient structures, all of which are said to be haunted, will engage even the most reluctant readers.

In this book Tiya Miles explores the popular yet troubling phenomenon of "ghost tours," frequently promoted and experienced at plantations, urban manor homes, and cemeteries throughout the South. As a staple of the tours, guides entertain paying customers by routinely relying on stories of enslaved black specters. But who are these ghosts? Examining popular sites and stories from these tours, Miles shows that haunted tales routinely appropriate and skew African American history to produce representations of slavery for commercial gain. "Dark tourism" often highlights the most sensationalist and macabre aspects of slavery, from salacious sexual ties between white masters and black women slaves to the physical abuse and torture of black bodies to the supposedly exotic nature of African spiritual practices. Because the realities of slavery are largely absent from these tours, Miles reveals how they continue to feed problematic "Old South" narratives and erase the hard truths of the Civil War era. In an incisive and engaging work, Miles uses these troubling cases to shine light on how we feel about the Civil War and race, and how the ghosts of the past are still with us.
