Excerpt from Handbook of Polar Discoveries Exploration of the Arctic world has fitly illustrated the truth of Benjamin Franklin's aphorism, that 'an investment in knowledge always pays the best interest;' for during the past two centuries that dreary and seemingly unproductive region of our globe has yielded commercial materials far exceeding a thousand million dollars in value. This fact alone is sufficient answer to the utilitarian objection to Arctic research; and accurate knowledge of Arctic lands is well worth the having, for purely practical purposes if no other, because the available wealth of this northern world is by no means exhausted. It was commercial interest, indeed, which gave the inception to Arctic investigation, in the search for a northwest passage from Europe to the Orient; and the progress of this search alone led to most important geographic discoveries. But while Arctic voyagers have penetrated to latitude 83 24', within about 450 miles of the geographic pole, an area of the north polar regions exceeding three million square miles remains unexplored. Excerpt from Discovery and Adventure in the Polar Seas and Regions The narrative of these voyages, down to the close of the ninth chapter, was carefully drawn from the most authentic sources by Mr. Murray, whose labours in a similar depart ment of literature have been received by the public with no common approbation. They include the adventures and exploits of many of those navigators of whom their country has the greatest reason to be proud. Such in early times were Willoughby, Chancelor, Frobisher, Davis, Hudson; more recently Parry, Scoresby, Ross, the uncle and nephew, with others of little inferior note. The wild and strange scenes through which their career led, the peculiar perils with which it was beset, the hairbreadth escapes and some times tragical events that ensued, give to their narratives an interest similar to that of romance. Excerpt from Discovery and Adventure in the Polar Seas and Regions: With Illustrations of Their Climate, Geology, and Natural History The chapter on Natural History, though the subject be treated by Mr Murray in a popular rather than in a scientific manner, has received the careful revision of a distinguished naturalist. Excerpt from Polar Exploration I am glad to have this opportunity of presenting to a wide public an outline of the essential facts and problems of Polar Exploration. It is not more than introductory to a more comprehensive book which I hope to write when some leisure is afforded from the more real work of exploration and research. I must also note that it is not intended to be in any way a history of Polar Exploration. The book is simply a "traveller's sample," revealing to some extent what is in the great "warehouse" of the Polar Regions. Excerpt from Round About the North Pole Mong the many books about the Polar regions there is none quite like this, dealing with the gradual progress of exploration towards the north along the different areas of advance within the Arctic Circle. The subject is always interesting, for few regions have been the scene of more persistent effort and exciting adventure and unexpected gains from the unknown, particularly in the earlier days when the endeavour to find the northern passages to the east and west led to the beginning of our foreign trade. It is often asked, What is the use of further Arctic discovery? No one knows. Nor did any one know the use of most discoveries before they were made.
