Excerpt from Handbook of Historic Schools of Painting The aim of the author is to give in a more simple and condensed form than has hitherto been attempted some general knowledge of the principal historic schools of painting, their characteristics, chief artists, and some of the most noted paintings executed by each. This book is the outgrowth of lectures given to classes of students, who, from lack of time and opportunity, were unable to undertake the study of the voluminous standard works which treat of the subject, and it is hoped that it will meet the want of many other such students. All dates and other facts regarding painters and their pictures have been carefully studied and are believed to be authentic. The authorities consulted have been chiefly Lübké, Kügler, Wornum, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and Mrs. Jameson. Excerpt from Handbook of Painting, Vol. 1 of 2: The Italian Schools; Based on the Handbook of Kugler Signor Morelli's work caused a profound sensation especially in Germany, Where the study of Art is pursued with greater ardour, and upon more scientific principles, than in any other country. The novelty of his opinions, his method of analysis, and the unsparing way in which he destroyed the reputation of many famous pictures, and exposed the falsity of many time-honoured traditions in the history of painting, raised, at first, a storm of protests. But his Views have now, for the most part, been accepted, and have even led to extensive changes in the naming and classing of pictures in the principal German galleries; whilst in England and elsewhere his method of investigation has been approved and adopted by the ablest writers on Art. In his own country he has founded a school of criticism, and has had many distinguished followers.2i. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Handbook to the Public Picture Galleries of Europe: With a Brief Sketch of the History of the Various Schools of Painting, From the 13th Century to the 18th Inclusive Still it has not been found possible to see and compare so many fine works without occasionally expressing some sort of opinion here and there. The most difficult problem perhaps which presents itself to the travelling Fine Art student is that of determining the authorship of certain pictures. Each gallery decides for itself - and naturally shows some partiat in doing so - the authenticity of the works in its own possession. In some few instances, in which the assumption of a great name was obviously unjustifiable, I have at once said the work ascribed to such a master is certainly not by his hand but in a certain proportion of doubtful examples and they are numerous - I have felt it was not in my province to contest the name employed. On the other hand, in many cases throughout the catalogues I have intentionally denoted the existence of grave doubt by placing the words attributed to after the painter's name. Excerpt from A Handbook of Pictorial Art As has been said often enough, this book is an attempt at a readable introduction to the study of Art, beginning with Landscape, as the branch most likely to be pursued in this country from free choice and affection for the subject. There is no reason for insisting on any other principle for the pursuit of Art, as the commercial motives are sure to be fully under stood and appreciated. Without comment on the prevailing taste for French land scape, it may be said that the English Realist and Naturalist School will develope the powers and reward the efforts of any faithful student; and that if such a person desires to proceed from landscape to historical painting, the present work will help him as far as it goes. Excerpt from Handbook of the Paintings and Sculptures in the Permanent Collections of the Corcoran Gallery of Art The Institution was chartered by Act Of Congress, May 24, 1870. By that Act the building and its contents were declared exempt from all taxation. The organization of the Gallery was completed by the Board Of Trustees on November 6, 1873, and on April 29, 1874, all of the rooms of the Institution for exhibition purposes were opened to the public. The building was used for the purposes for which it was intended until it became apparent that, as planned, it would, in a comparatively short time, be wholly inadequate for the proper display Of the works of art belonging to the Gallery, while larger and better facilities were already required for the rapidly growing Free Art School, forwhich thoughtful provision had been previously made by Mr. Corcoran. At the same time, it was found that it would not be possible to enlarge the then existing build ing so as to meet the future wants Of the two establish ments.
