This comprehensive survey, published to coincide with a major exhibition, explores the work of the Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershi (1864-1916). In haunting interior scenes, Hammershi dispensed with anecdotal detail, transforming his apartment into a series of disturbingly empty spaces. The same strange stillness can be seen in his portraits, landscapes, and city views of his native Copenhagen and of London, in all of which the passage of time appears to have been inexplicably suspended. Expertly produced, Hammershi explores the singularity of the artist’s vision, placing his achievement in the context of ?n-de-sicle Symbolist art and examining his links with Dutch masters of the seventeenth century. Widely revered in Europe during his lifetime, Hammershi is now ripe for rediscovery.

Documenting the first-ever reconstruction of Fontana's immersive installations Lucio Fontana's (1899-1968) Ambienti spaziali, or Spatial Environments were immersive installations that include neon crystal tubes, paint that glows under black light and captivating pa-pier-mâché sculptures. Fontana's use of technology pushed the boundaries of art beyond the canvas to "paint" with light and invite viewers into the physical space of the work itself. In spring 2020 Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles staged the first comprehensive presentation of Ambienti spaziali in the United States, carefully reconstructing the installations as they initially appeared from 1948 to the final years of the artist's life. This accompanying volume is edited in collaboration with Milan's Fondazione Lucio Fontana and includes a survey of Fontana's contributions to the evolution of conceptual art, tracing his influence on other legendary figures as Piero Manzoni, Yayoi Kusama and James Turrell.

These artists? designs are crafted from a variety of materials, ranging from traditional gold and silver with precious and semi-precious gems to enamel, aluminium, bronze and iron. Beginning with an exquisitely crafted gold cuff by Louise Bourgeois, the project has evolved to include artists such as John Baldessari, Phyllida Barlow, Stefan Brüggemann and Subodh Gupta. This extensive publication, complete with hundreds of illustrations by such renowned artists as Carl Larsson, Edvard Munch, Vilhelm Hammershøi, Helene Schjerfbeck, Pekka Halonen, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Gerhard Munthe, Pietro Krohn, and Frida Hansen, among others, offers an unprecedented study of Japanese influence on the visual arts in the Nordic countries. This unlikely diffusion of Japanese culture, known collectively as Japonisme, became increasingly apparent in England, France, and elsewhere in Europe during the 19th century, although nowhere was the influence seemingly as pervasive as it was throughout the Nordic countries. The book reveals how the widespread interest in Japanese aesthetics helped to establish notions of a fundamental unity between the arts and transformed the region's visual vocabulary. The adoption of Japanese motifs and styles in Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark gave a necessary cohesion to their existing artistic language, creating a vital balance within and among all of the decorative arts.
