This examination of the Christian life constitutes one of the most remarkable books of devotion ever written. William Law's book dates from 1728, a decade before England's great evangelical revival, during which it exercised a significant influence on the movement's leaders. A Serious Call has been praised by readers as varied as Samuel Johnson, Edward Gibbon, and John Wesley. "If Mr. Law finds a spark of piety in a reader's mind, he will soon kindle it into a flame," declared Gibbon, and Wesley pronounced Law's work as one of the books that formed his "explicit resolve to be all devoted to God." Three hundred years after its initial publication, this volume continues to win accolades from modern readers who appreciate its guidelines on prayer, personal holiness, and charity. Simple but profound, it features brief chapters that make it particularly suitable for daily devotions.

Excerpt from Thanksgiving: A Sermon Preached in the Arch Street Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, on Thursday, November 28, 1861 The simple and obvious meaning of the text is, that we have always something to be thankful for; that gratitude is due to God in every earthly con dition in which a living man can be placed. And this is a truth appropriate to this occasion, for we are observing our great national festival in circum stances wherein some men judge that the keeping a fast in sackcloth were a more seemly service. It cannot be denied that we are to-day a deeply dis tressed people, and that our attempted offerings of thanksgiving will ascend largely from desolate house holds and sorrowing hearts. Excerpt from Thanksgiving Sermon: Preached Before the Thirty-Ninth O. V., U. S. An;, At Camp Todd, Macon, Missouri, Nov, 28, 1861, and a Sketch of the Regiment O, give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good. - Ps. cxviii: 1. Every duty which God requires of his creatures is perfectly reasonable. As moral and accountable beings, we are the subjects of the Divine government; our homage, and our obedience to Gods authority and law, are righteous and reasonable demands. As dependent creatures, receiving every good and perfect gift from his kind and bountiful hand, gratitude and thanksgiving should flow from every heart, and burden the utterances of every tongue. To-day, in nineteen of these United States, in accordance with a time-honored usage, the people, by the Governors of their respective States, have been invited to lay aside the cares and business of life, to think of the manifold blessings of Divine Providenee, and at their homes and Christian sanctuaries, to offer fervent prayer and grateful acknowledgements to our Heavenly Father, for his abundant goodness and plenteous mercy.
