Obesity is not simply weight gain nor is it a cosmetic or fitness issue. Your goal is to reduce the hazardous and ugly fats that surround your abdomen and organs, deep within your belly that put you at risk for degenerative diseases such as heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, cancer, gout, osteoarthritis and others. There is no quick fix to fat loss, only prevention, as obesity is a lifestyle disease. It took you years of poor eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle to make you fat. Fat loss is therefore not an event, a program (dieting) nor merely a number you see on the weighing scale or your BMI. A pair of “loose pants” is a better indicator of fat loss. In essence, if you lost weight without reducing your waist circumference, you haven't done much for yourself. To escape from the obesity trap, counting calories, dieting or cutting fat out of your diet or starvation will not help. Instead, to lose fat, you need to know how the body stores and burns fat. You need to incorporate certain lifestyle changes to mobilize your hormones to co-operate with the body to burn fat to overcome your body's resistance to permanent fat loss. That is what this book is all about.

This book presents an unprecedented opportunity for people to hear from a simultaneously ostracized, ridiculed, and ignored group: fat Americans. Find out how the members of this very diverse group of people describe their actual lived experiences, quality of life, hopes and dreams, and demands. Our society is body-size obsessed. The result? An environment where "fat people" are consistently shunned and discussed disparagingly behind their backs. Although fat people typically bear the brunt of the institutionalized oppression around being oversized, pervasive closeminded attitudes about body size in America affect everyone of all sizes—from people who are shamed for being too thin to those whose lives revolve around the fear of becoming fat. This book talks about a topic that is important to all readers, regardless of their physical size, providing an anthology of first-person accounts of what it's like to be part of the fat-acceptance movement and on the front lines of activism in the "war on obesity." The Politics of Size: Perspectives from the Fat Acceptance Movement supplies a frank discussion of the issues surrounding being fat and the associated health concerns—both physical and mental—and reframes the discussion about obesity from a medical issue to a social one. The essays serve to correct misinformation about obesity and fat people that is commonly accepted by the general public, such as the idea that "fat" and "healthy" are mutually exclusive. Subject matter covered includes fat-friendly workplace policies; fat dating experiences; and the intersections of being fat and also a person of color, a person with disabilities, a transgender person, or a member of another sub-group of society.

Obesity is a major national health problem, and science has been developing a number of ways to address it. The most revolutionary is surgical intervention to alter the gastrointestinal system so that less food/nutrients can be consumed and/or absorbed. People who undergo this surgery usually experience drastic weight loss and dramatic health improvements. They also discover a new sense of self and face challenges often unimaginable when they were obese. Using in-depth, first person accounts of 33 men and women who underwent weight-loss surgery, this book elaborates on the complexities of finally getting what you wished for— the good, the bad, and the totally unexpected. We live in a culture fascinated by physical make-overs, but no one talks about their psychological consequences. Losing a lot of weight is perhaps the most extreme make-over of all. It leaves people emotionally changed, and these changes are the heart of this book. The fascinating narratives contain important lessons for individuals considering or having had the surgery and for those who try to help them. It is simply a story of how finally getting what you’ve always wished for can be much more complicated affair than you ever imagined.

How do the media represent obesity and eating disorders? How are these representations related to one another? And how do the news media select which scientific findings and policy decisions to report? Multi-disciplinary in approach, Obesity, Eating Disorders and the Media presents critical new perspectives on media representations of obesity and eating disorders, with analyses of print, online, and televisual media framings. Exploring abjection and alarm as the common themes linking media framings of obesity and eating disorders, Obesity, Eating Disorders and the Media shows how the media similarly position these conditions as dangerous extremes of body size and food practice. The volume then investigates how news media selectively cover and represent science and policy concerning obesity and eating disorders, with close attention to the influence of pre-existing framings alongside institutional and moral agendas. A rich, comprehensive analysis of media framings of obesity and eating disorders - as embodied conditions, complex disorders, public health concerns, and culturally significant phenomena - this volume will be of interest to scholars and students across the social sciences and all those interested in understanding cultural aspects of obesity and eating disorders.
