The significance of organometallic chemistry has constantly increased during the second half of this century. The Gmelin Institute recognizes this fact in publishing an entire series on organometallic compounds, listed in the Complete Catalog. Within this series the description of the organogermanium compounds has started, of which already two volumes have been published. The present third volume in the organogermanium series describes the remainder of GeR3R' compounds, all other types of tetraorganogermanium compounds, from GeR2R'2 to GeRR'R"R"', germacyclic compounds of various ring sizes, including spiro compounds, and compounds with low-coordinate germanium atoms such as GeR3 radicals, germylenes, and germanocenes. The volume concludes with an empirical formula index.

The Gmelin Formula Index and its First Supplement covered those volumes of the Eighth Edition of the Gmelin Handbook which had been issued up to the end of 1979. The present Second Supplement updates the Index by inclusion of the volumes which appeared until the end of 1987. With this Second Supplement all compounds described in the Gmelin Handbook of Inorganic Chemistry in the period between 1922 and 1987 can be located. The basic structure of the Formula Index remained the same as in the previous editions. The cumulated contents of the Index and its Supplements are contained in the Gmelin Formula Index (GFI) database which is available to the scientific community via STN. This database will be update regularly to reflect the published Handbook volumes as close as possible. Volume 4 of the 2nd Supplement contains 11.730 entries and covers the empirical formulas beginning with the symbols C7 to C11.4.

Gmelin Handbook of Inorganic and Organometallic Chemistry, presently comprising over 600 volumes, is the most comprehensive collection of chemical and physical data of the elements and their compounds in the world. It is Gmelin's first aim to assemble and systematically classify the research findings scattered throughout the innumerable publications of the international primary literature. This vast amount of information is classified on the basis of the chemical elements, which in itself contributes to "user friendliness". A survey of the contents of the Handbook is given in the Complete Catalog (published every second year, with supplements in between), which can, thus, be very helpful when beginning a search. Access to a specific compound becomes even easier through consultation of the Formula Index volumes. For over three years the Gmelin Formula Index (plus the Complete Catalog entries) has been available as an online database, GFI, from STN. Online searches provide for a most comfortable and fast access to the Handbook. GFI is the first constituent of the complete Gmelin database presently under development. Subscribers to the Handbook are entitled to a 50 % discount when searching GFI online.

This volume starts the updating of the information on organonickel chemistry, one of the most active areas of modern organometallic chemistry. It covers all mononuclear compounds containing one nickel-to-carbon bond. The main part is devoted to the family of planar NiII compounds, RNi(D)2X, which within 20 years has increased from about 250 to more than 1000 members. This research interest has been stimulated by the fact that many compounds insert various unsaturated species into the Ni-C bond to create new organonickel species. Moreover, these compounds are important as intermediates in many catalytic processes involving organic halides. Compounds containing h*2-bonded heteroalkene molecules including the C1 fragments CO2 and CS2, and related metallocyclic compounds are also emphasized in this volume. These types of compounds play an important role in a number of nickel-catalyzed co-oligomerization reactions involving unsaturated organic compounds. Most of the compounds are well-characterized by modern spectroscopic techniques. The various types of compounds are in most cases confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The author of these volumes, a member of the M lheim group, has made many contributions of his own and is eminently qualified to critically review this area of research.
