The last book on the lactating sow was published over 15 years ago. This new book brings us up to date in current knowledge on the gestating and lactating sow. It covers new and important topics such as conditioning of gilts for optimal reproductive performance, feeding high fibre diets to gestating sows and providing various fat sources in gestation and lactation. It also describes the several key success factors to group-housing systems in gestation, which is a must due to the current move towards group-housing. The new concept of transition feeding for sows is discussed, as well as the factors involved in mammary development of gilts and sows, both of which are instrumental for maximum colostrum and/or milk yields. The impact of the human-animal interactions on sow welfare and performance is discussed with focus on new handling practices that could be developed to overbalance the negative interactions inherent to pig management systems. Updates on must-have topics, such as amino acid and energy requirements of sows, colostrum and milk yield and composition, and sow health are also provided. The subjects covered in this book will assist animal scientists, nutritionists, veterinarians and swine producers in learning the most recent information on relevant and current topics affecting sow production, and in knowing which areas are in need of further research efforts.

This book explores how and when biology emerged as a science in Germany. Beginning with the debate about organism between Georg Ernst Stahl and Gottfried Leibniz at the start of the eighteenth century, John Zammito traces the development of a new research program, culminating in 1800, in the formulation of developmental morphology. He shows how over the course of the century, naturalists undertook to transform some domains of natural history into a distinct branch of natural philosophy, which attempted not only to describe but to explain the natural world and became, ultimately, the science of biology.

A unique introduction to the constitutional arguments for and against the right to abortion In January 1973, the Supreme Court’s opinion in Roe v. Wade struck down most of the country's abortion laws and held for the first time that the Constitution guarantees women the right to safe and legal abortions. Nearly five decades later, in 2022, the Court’s 5-4 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization overturned Roe and eliminated the constitutional right, stunning the nation. Instead of finally resolving the constitutional issues, Dobbs managed to bring new attention to them while sparking a debate about the Supreme Court’s legitimacy. Originally published in 2005, What Roe v. Wade Should Have Said asked eleven distinguished constitutional scholars to rewrite the opinions in this landmark case in light of thirty years’ experience but making use only of sources available at the time of the original decision. Offering the best arguments for and against the constitutional right to abortion, the contributors have produced a series of powerful essays that get to the heart of this fascinating case. In addition, Jack Balkin gives a detailed historical introduction that chronicles the Roe litigation—and the constitutional and political clashes that followed it—and explains the Dobbs decision and its aftermath.

The Gestation Law is complementary to the Law of Attraction. It states that there is a given incubation or gestation period for each seed. A certain period that a specific seed requires to be formed until it can evolve from the blueprint to a fully realized physical shape. Being prospective entrepreneurs, when the time comes to making the business vision clear, they are ready to go ahead in full swing in abnormal haste. There may be many factors that add to this hurried decision. Money may be a decisive factor. At a workplace that does not longer feel comfortable to be in, it may be a relief from a stressful work environment. Whatever may be the reason, one of the most powerfully motivating desires people face as they struggle through their lives and make strides in building a new business entity to surpass the surrounding competitors. However, with a higher degree of persistence, dedication, and self valuation, it is always critical to balance this driving force. Founding a new company or venture is like a new baby's birth. There is a gestation cycle and a developmental phase, which is extremely crucial. It is not at all comfortable. It cannot be hurried. The essence is to allow space for every activity to take shape and evolve in its natural course. Every bit of the clearly defined and vividly crafted priority is a seed in itself. Each has a period of gestation, a fixed period from the moment one plants it to the point that it has completely evolved into its tangible shape. How long will the gestation period remain like that? The question is not so simple to answer. People have no clue about it. But this is what they do know that it will take a while. Besides, they also know that if they continue to unearth the planted seeds, the entire effort will go in vain. Sometimes, people cause the process to slow down a bit or, worse, stall it entirely when they get nervous about completing the task. It is because anxiety and stress prevent them from reaching their higher-thinking layers of the brain responsible for visualizing and scheduling the tasks lying ahead. As a result, they tend to get trapped in the survival state and have no options but to make choices from a position of scarcity and insecurity, while sending mixed signals to the society as a whole, they are apprehensive about more uncertain things to come. When an individual grows and develops, the progression occurs at its specified time frame. It cannot be rushed to a conclusion when making preparations to break open and blossom when a fermenting seed is in complete darkness.
