Excerpt from The Sunset-Midway Oil Field California, Vol. 1: Geology and Oil Resources It is commonly supposed that the geologist is concerned with only the first of these prob lems, and that once the position of the new field is pointed out his duties are ended. But in reality the efficient handling of any pool depends upon the geologist as much as upon the engineer or the well driller, especially such pools as those which occur in the feebly con solidated sedimentary beds of the Tertiary The proper interpretation of the well records and the correlation of these data with the areal geology depend upon the geologist more than upon anyone else, and his work should afford the comprehensive picture of the under ground conditions that is so essential to the petroleum operator. Excerpt from Chemical Relations of the Oil-Field Waters in San Joaquin Valley, California: Preliminary Report During the rapid rise of the petroleum industry in the last 50 years the geologic occurrence of petroleum has received a great amount of study, and the interesting problems involved in its origin and migra tion have engaged the attention of many geologists. Fit has long been known that Oil and gas are commonly associated with water, and the great importance of the water as a physical agent in the migra tion of the Oil has been recognized in all geologic theories of the accumulation of oil. Of the chemical relations between the water and the Oil, however, we know little) and scientific literature con tains only a few references even to the chemical character Of the waters themselves. Apparently many of the current ideas on this subject either are erroneous or can be accepted only with important modifications. Excerpt from Geology and Oil Resources of the Santa Maria Oil District, Santa Barbara County, California During the last three years the region near the Pacific coast in the northern part of Santa Barbara County, Cal. Has shown promise of becoming one Of the most productive Oil fields of the West, if not Of the whole United States. The developed fields lie on the low, rolling hills between the Santa Maria and Lompoc valleys, where the Oil has accumulated in great abundance in the Monterey shale, Of middle Tertiary age, which underlies this region. The lightness of the Oil, which averages from 25° to 27° Baume, and the great productiveness Of the wells, which yield as high as barrels a day, with an average of 300 to 400 barrels, are among the features for which the district has become noted. Large areas in the same general region as the productive fields have been known for some time to be analo gous, so far as surface evidence went, to the proved territory, and it was thought that geologic investigations of the region might furnish valuable information and aid in the extension Of developments. Accordingly, with the purpose Of studying the occurrence Of the Oil, the extent and structure of the oil-bearing formations, and their rela tions to associated formations, the writers carried on the field work leading to the present report during the summer and autumn of 1906. The geology of the region covered by the accompanying geo logic map (pl. I, in pocket) has not been completely studied in all parts. Between the San Rafael and Santa Ynez ranges it has been worked with considerable detail, but the mapping Of the mountainous regions has been more in the nature of a reconnaissance outside of the areas of the Monterey formation. Excerpt from Petroleum Resources of California: With Special Reference to Unproved Areas Chapter I has been devoted to describing the general geological facts that govern the origin and accumulation of petroleum in California based upon the actual conditions that exist in the proven fields. A knowledge of these conditions is absolutely necessary for successful exploration work. Chapter II describes the rock formations of the state which are directly, or indirectly, connected with the petroleum deposits. The character, thickness. Where found, relationship to the Oil measures and relative productiveness are briefly discussed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
