Excerpt from General and Practical Optics In this third edition of "General and Practical Optics" I trust that some of the faults of previous editions will be found remedied. The subject-matter has been revised, condensed, rearranged, and rewritten, to some extent, and considerable fresh matter has been introduced. Although primarily intended as a textbook for candidates for the examination of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers, it is written also as a reference book for those engaged in spectacle work, for other students of Optics, and as an introduction to the study of more advanced works. In previous editions I acknowledged my indebtedness to Dr. George Lindsay Johnson and to Mr. H. Oscar Wood. Here again, and to an increased extent, I repeat my recognition of the invaluable co-operation of Mr. Wood in compiling and writing the subject-matter, and in revising and correcting the work. As stated before, I have endeavoured to cover, in this book and in "Visual Optics and Sight-Testing," all that is essential for the sight-testing optician. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from Practical Optics for the Laboratory and Workshop Although some of the devices mentioned are not yet to be found on the market, I have given scale drawings of such things (as, for example, optical benches), all of which have been found thoroughly practical, so that those who have a small workshop available may construct necessary apparatus for themselves. Excerpt from Optics: A Manual for Students The student who refers to the standard works on Optics will probably not find them exactly adapted to meet his requirements. With a great deal of information about rainbows and halos they will not tell him what is the actual size of a retinal image, or what is the effect of a decentred lens on the incident light.
