Galatians is one of the earliest of the Pauline letters and is therefore among the first documents written by Christians in the first century. Paul’s letter to the Galatians deals with the first real controversy in the early church: the status of Jews and gentiles in this present age and the application of the Law of Moses to gentiles. Paul argues passionately that gentiles are not “converting” to Judaism and therefore should not be expected to keep the Law. Gentiles who accept Jesus as Savior are “free in Christ,” not under the bondage of the Law. Galatians also deals with an important pastoral issue in the early church as well. If gentiles are not “under the Law,” are they free to behave any way they like? Does Paul’s gospel mean that gentiles can continue to live like pagans and still be right with God? For Paul, the believer’s status as an adopted child of God enables them to serve God freely as dearly loved children. Galatians: Freedom through God's Grace is commentary for laypeople, Bible teachers, and pastors who want to grasp how the original readers of Galatians would have understood Paul’s letter and how this important ancient letter speaks to Christians living in similar situations in the twenty-first century.

Whose approval do you hope to win? Friends? Coworkers? Someone in your family? What about God? Do you sometimes wonder if you need to do more to earn his approval? Religious teachers in the early church were insisting that faith was not enough, that being right with God required something more. Early Christians were almost ready to accept and follow these extra requirements. This disturbed the apostle Paul. So he reminded the believers that salvation isn't based on following a religious code. Nor is it based on what we do (or don't do) or what we know or feel. Nothing is required on our part, except to believe. In showing us the profound difference between living by law and living by grace, he reminds us that we are indeed free in Christ. As you read, study, journal, and discuss the book of Galatians, watch for these key themes that Max will unpack throughout the book: Salvation comes by grace, not works. We should bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit in our lives. We will reap in life what we have sown in life. The Life Lessons with Max Lucado series brings the Bible to life in twelve lessons filled with intriguing questions, inspirational stories, and poignant reflections to take you deeper into God's Word. Each lesson includes: An opening reflection on the Bible book you're studying. Background information to deepen your understanding of the cultural and historical setting. An excerpt of the text (from the NIV and the NKJV). Exploration questions with plenty of room to write your own thoughts and notes. Inspirational thoughts from Max as well as a closing takeaway for further reflection. The Life Lessons series is ideal for use in both a small-group setting or for individual study.

Paul's Letter to the Galatians is one of the earliest writings of the New Testament and, though short, it is one of the most important. In responding to the situation in the Galatian churches Paul brought out the deeper significance of events and people's reactions to them. His letter is not just an interesting historical document from which we can learn something about a small part of history of the early Church; it has a lasting significance for our own lives and lessons we must apply in our own churches today.

In this new series - BIBLE THREADS, Keys to Understanding the Bible - Arlington McRae offers us a fresh new 21st century paradigm for how we approach the Bible and understand its essential message. The Bible presents us with a series of stories and related events. The question becomes, "How are these stories and events connected? And what are we to do with them?" The answer is found in understanding "Bible Threads". A Bible thread is the link or bridge that connects the stories and books. A Bible thread is what each story and/or book has in common with other books or stories from Genesis to Revelation. This series addresses the indispensable threads to prepare you to read your Bible enthusiastically with great understanding; and to allow you the joy of discovering other threads for yourself through your own daily Bible study. This volume offers a power packed, Jesus inspired, potentially life-changing resource as it presents the Bible to us in its simplest form. Starting at the beginning, the author walks us through a new "perspective" and a new "context" for how we understand and interpret what we read. It is designed for (a) those of us new to the Bible, and (b) those who never received a comprehensive overview of the Bible that makes sense to them. In this volume, the author lays out the structure and the over all story - the big picture - of the Bible. This presentation is designed to broaden the context for how we interpret and unify the various books and stories. At the completion of this volume, you will be encouraged to read your Bible and to study it more intelligently with much more confidence and with a satisfying sense of accomplishment.
