Excerpt from Further Studies in the Prayer Book The following pages are to some extent a continuation of the line of study pursued in The Workmanship of the Prayer-Book. More attention is here given to the possible influence of German Service-Books (or Directories for Worship); and use has been made of the original (German) form of Archbishop Hermann's Deliberatio, with some interesting results. The paper on "Our Alms and Oblations" appeared, almost as it stands, in the Journal of Theological Studies (vol. i.), and the discussion of the Minatory Clauses of the Athanasian Creed has also (with some few differences) already appeared in print, in pamphlet form. The discussion of some of the problems presented by the Prayer of Humble Access, added as an Appendix, appeared in the Irish Church Quarterly for January 1908. Excerpt from The Fruits of Silence: Being Further Studies in the Common Use of Prayer Without Words; Together With Kindred Essays in Worship Moralists sometimes remind us that the world is growing old, - that in the hurry, anxiety, and restlessness of our times we may recognize tokens of the end of all things being near. Even without their warnings we know instinctively that there is no return for us to the freshness and tranquillity of the juventus mundi; that the beat of this enormous world - machine - the society of to-day - can never relax, but must for ever increase to more and more waste of human life, more weariness and exhaustion. Our own heart is aware of something like an evening chill and gloom settling down upon us. We seem to wait not for light, but for deepening shadows. Excerpt from The Prayer-Book: Its History, Language and Contents There is no book, with the exception of the Bible itself, to which English Churchmen are so warmly attached as the Book of Common Prayer, and yet it is to be feared that even among educated Churchmen there is much ignorance of its history, its teaching, its language, and the principles of its construction. This is, surely, a matter for grave consideration. Bearing in mind the large use we make of the prayer-book (a larger use than is made of any corresponding book in any other Church), it. Must be highly important that every member of the Church should, as far as possible, be' in possession of such knowledge as would enable him to fairly comprehend its scope, meaning, and authority. Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. The nature of the interpolations in View has been already defined. There is no reference to any private1 intercessions or devo tions of the Celebrant, but to the direct interpolation of portions of other Offices.
