Excerpt from Froissart's Modern Chronicles The true reason of my undertaking this book was for my amusement, to which I have ever been inclined, and for which I have frequented the company Of divers noblemen and privy councillors, as well in England as in Scotland and Ireland. And perhaps as this book is neither SO exactly nor so well written as such events as I Shall record require I pray to be excused if I have done injustice to any Of the noble lords, privy councillors, and gentlemen Of Parliament mentioned therein. Excerpt from F. C. G. 'S Froissart's Modern Chronicles, 1902 T may be that the first book Of these chronicles was not examined nor corrected so justly as such a case requireth. Therefore to acquit me in that behalf, and in following the truth as near as I can, I have enterprised to set down the true report Of the acts, gests and deeds done in our parts, and in Africa, in the year Of our Lord a thousand nine hundred and two, and how and with what labours, dangers, and perils they were gested and done. Excerpt from A Shorter Froissart: Being Selections From the Chronicles of Froissart The stories from Froissart in this selection follow as closely as possible the translation of Lord Berners. It has, of course, been necessary to modernize the spelling, but otherwise a modern word has been substituted only where the old one would not nowadays be understood. Excerpt from Chronicle and Romance: Froissart, Malory, Holinshed But it is as the supreme chronicler of the later age of chivalry that he lives. God has been gracious enough, he writes, to permit me to visit the courts and palaces of kings, and all the nobles, kings, dukes, counts, barons, and knights, belonging to all nations, have been kind to me, have listened to me, willingly received. Me, and proved very useful to me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Chronicles of Froissart (1337-1410) are one of the greatest contemporary records of fourteenth-century England and France. Depicting the great age of Anglo-French rivalry from the deposition of Edward II to the downfall of Richard II, Froissart powerfully portrays the deeds of knights in battle at Sluys, Crecy, Calais and Poitiers during the Hundred Years War. Yet they are only part of this vigorous portrait of medieval life, which also vividly describes the Peasants' Revolt, trading activities and diplomacy against a backdrop of degenerate nobility. Written with the same sense of curiosity about character and customs that underlies the works of Froissart's contemporary, Chaucer, the Chronicles are a magnificent evocation of the age of chivalry.
