Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture, 1937, Vol. 1: A Review of Foreign Farm Policy, Production, and Trade Inefficient management and unwieldiness of many of the new farm units, shortage of draft power, and lack of incentive for the peasant to work under the new conditions combined to affect adversely the character of the field work and to accentuate the unfavorable influence of climatic conditions. Chronically late seedings extending far beyond the Optimum period with consequent detrimental effect on yields, weeds which became a veritable scourge during the early years of collectivization and have been causing much difficulty ever since, delayed and inefficient harvest ing, and grain left lying in the fields unbound for a considerable length of time were some of the aspects of poor farming criticized time and again in the Soviet press and speeches of c?ficials during the early thirties. Naturally, yields of most crops in 1931 and 1932 were very low. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture, Vol. 1: A Review of Foreign Farm Policy, Production, and Trade; February, 1937 The violence of the change in earning power is even greater than indicated because the average for 1928 - 29 to 1932 - 33 is affected as much by the extremely low gross incomes of the depression years as by the high figures at the beginning of the period. The low point in earnings per hectare appears to have occurred in 1933-34. A rise has been noted during the past 2 years because of more favorable prices. Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture, Vol. 1: A Review of Foreign Farm Policy, Production, and Trade; March, 1937 A review of the steps taken since 1933 to regulate German agri culture help to provide a proper perspective of the Four - Year Plan. The first major development in the new agricultural self-sufficiency program was the decision early in 1933 materially to curtail imports, particularly of cereals and those crops that could most readily be produced in Germany. The compulsory utilization of certain domestic products was extended, and production subsidies were set up in some cases. Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 35: No. 1; July 6, 1937 The 1937 fig cr0p in Messenia and Laconia, Greece, will be about short tons as compared with about 16, 500 tons in the preceding year, according to Louis G. Michael, Agricultural Attache, Belgrade, Yugoslavia. Up to the middle of July 193 it was expected that the 1936 cr0p would reach'22,000 short tons; unfavorable weather during the maturing of the fruit, however, caused heavy damage. Exports of figs from the port of Kalamata, Messenia, ad from ports of Laconia in the marketing year amounted to about 16, 000 short tons as against tons in the preceding year. During the l936 37 season, fig packers experienced many difficulties in completing their contracts profitably in European markets. According to the san itary certificates issued to the respective fig packers, exports to the United States amounted to about 900 short tons last season. Because of the difficulties which packers experienced in European markets, it is possible that exports to the United States may reach tons in the coming season.
