Excerpt from Plants of Yellowstone National Park It is for the purpose of supplying this demand that the present publication has been prepared. It is the result of several years of study in the park by both authors. An effort has been made through out the book to avoid technical language, so far as possible, and to make use of characters that are readily observed in the field even without the use of a lens. We advise anyone who has had no botanical training to: read all of the introductory matter (pp. 1 - 8) before attempting to use the book. We believe that having done this he will be able, by using the keys, descriptions, and illustrations, to determine accurately the name of any wild flower or tree that he may find in the park. Excerpt from Catalogue of the Flora of Montana and the Yellowstone National Park In the summer of 1895 Mr. C. L. Shear and the author were commissioned field agents by the Division of Agrostology of the United States Department of Agriculture, and about seven weeks were spent within the state of Montana. Collections were made in the vicinity of several stations of the Union Pacific Railroad from Lima to Silver Bow; at Deer Lodge; and at nine stations of the Northern Pacific Railroad from Garrison to Bozeman. The following summer I was again detailed by the Division for work in Montana, and was accompanied by Mr. J. H. Flodman, of Luther Academy, Wahoo, Nebraska, who made a private collection at the same time. Collections were made in the Spanish Basin of the Madison Range; in and around the Bridger, Elk, Little Belt, and Crazy Mountains; and in the Gallatin and Musselshell Valleys. Although my work during these two summers was practically confined to the grasses and other forage plants, I gained a fair knowledge of the general flora of the state. About two years ago I published three papers in the Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club, under the title, "Rarities from Montana," and in them several new species were described. In the summer of 1897, through the generosity of Mr. William E. Dodge, of this city, a botanical expedition was sent out to Montana and the Yellowstone National Park, under the auspices of this institution. The author was in charge of the expedition, and was assisted by Mr. Ernst A. Bessey, then of the University of Nebraska. Three months were spent in the field. With Bozeman as our base, we visited first the Bridger Mountains and the Spanish Basin, then crossed over into the Madison Valley, which we followed up into the Yellowstone Park, and returned by way of the Yellowstone River and Trail Creek Pass to Bozeman. Excerpt from Trees and Flowers of Yellowstone National Park In this book, technical terms and treatment have been avoided whenever possible. For the most part the genus is the smallest group considered, as the average visitor is not interested in fine distinctions among species; and even if he were he would get small comfort from the professional botanists, who are too often in hopeless disagreement among them selves. For those who are interested in more exact determinations, there is no substitute for the complete floras of Coulter ah-d Nelson and of Rydberg, covering the whole Rocky Mountain region. Mention must also be made of Rocky Mountain Flowers, by Clements and Clements, a work combining a high degree of scientific accuracy with adaptability for popular use, and illustrated with finely colored plates. N o artificial key has been included in this work, for it has been the writer's experience that these are rarely, if ever, used by the layman. The usual prae tice is to turn the leaves of the book until a picture is found that corresponds with the flower under ex amination. The plants are grouped according to their growth form, as trees, shrubs ah-d herbs, but beyond that they are left in approximately the same order in which their family affinities place them. This sets flowers of similar form and evolutionary history together, and has at least the virtue of being a natural arrange ment. Excerpt from The Yellowstone National Park: Historical and Descriptive As to the subject-matter itself, the author may properly repeat here from the preface of the previous edition that in every important respect the Yellowstone Park has so far fulfilled the expectation of its founders and has justified the wisdom of its creation. Our national parks are grow ing into an institution and the Yellowstone was the pioneer and remains the most important of them all. If o icial ambition for innovation and mercenary ambition for private gain are held under adequam restraint, there is no reason why it may not continue to the latest generation a genuine example of original nature - a benefit and an enjoyment, as the Act of Dedication puts it, to the people whose wisdom has preserved it to posterity.
