Excerpt from Flora of Pennsylvania In this Flora analytical keys formed by the contrasting of diagnostic characters precede the families, genera and species, and a key to the orders precedes the main body of the work. A description and a figure is cited for each species for exam ple, Man. P. 469 refers to a description on page 469 in Brit ton's Manual of the Flora of the Northern States and Canada, while 11. Pi. F. 1753 refers to a figure in Britton Brown's Illustrated Flora of the Northeastern United States, Canada and the British Possessions. Following the known geograph ical distribution of each species, is recorded its distribution within the State, outlined by counties, as it wasknown to the author. The outline map of Pennsylvania was drawn for this work by Mr. Benj. H. Smith, who has also kindly read part of the proof. Excerpt from Flora of Northeastern Pennsylvania Preface In accordance with the expressed wish of the late Doctor Everhart, as a supplement to the collection of woods and seeds of Lackawanna County, which he was making at the time he was stricken with his last illness, labeled and now on exhibition in the Museum, I presented my Herbarium of over 2, 000 specimens to the institution which bears its founders name. Incorporated in the Herbarium is a practically complete collection of the Flora of this part of the state, particularly of Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties. In further carrying out the wishes of Doctor Everhart I have prepared this check list of the Flora of the above region for publication. A preliminary list of the plants in the Lackawanna and Wyoming Valleys, of which Prof. W.R. Dudley, then of Cornell University, was the author, was published under the auspices of the Lackawanna Institute of History and Science, in 1887. This volume named 769 species as reported and classified. In 1892, Professor Dudley, then connected with the Leland Stanford University of California, and Prof. Charles O.Thurston of the Wyoming Seminary Scientific Department combined their personal notes, observations and collections with those of other students of local botanical research and issued a very complete catalog of "The Flowering Plants and vascular Cryptogams found in and near the Lackawanna and Wyoming Valleys." This volume contained the names of 107 orders and 974 species, to which there were later addenda of 88 species, - a total of 1, 062. Of this number several have since been considered doubtful, while others have become exterminated through forest fires or advance of cultivated areas and are not represented in this check list. The check list herewith presented contains the names of 115 orders and 1,534 species. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Botanical Class-Book and Flora of Pennsylvania, Designed for Seminaries of Learning and Private Classes: In Two Parts, Part I. Structural and Physiological Botany; Part II. Systematic Botany With few exceptions, I have adopted the nomenclature of the North American Flora of Torrey and Gray, for our native and naturalized plants, (so far as that flora at present extends, ) and for our cultivated exotics, the nomenclature of the Prodromus of De Candolle, regarding these, as they truly works. Excerpt from The Permian or Upper Carboniferous Flora of West Virginia and S. W. Pennsylvania We were led to confine our examinations and collections to the strata above the Pittsburg coal bed by several induce ments. One important reason was, that only in this por tion of the Carboniferous strata could we expect to find any change in the flora pointing to the assumption of a Per mian facies. Again, the fullest development of the highest beds occurs in West Virginia, and seem to be richer in plant impressions than elsewhere. Another reason was, that the plant impressions found' in the Pittsburg and underlying beds, had already received, or would soon receive, ample study in the surveys of the adjoining States.
