This book expands upon the beautiful Japanese written art form of traditional non-rhyming Haiku poetry, but in a uniquely American way. Haiku are, by definition, short and very tightly structured, consisting of seventeen syllables per three-line poem, with five, seven, and five syllables, respectively. This book preserves that sacred structure, but introduces careful internal rhyming (at minimum three rhymes per short poem), all while presenting important real-life lessons and teachable moments via memorable insights and punchlines. The stark simplicity and sparseness of Haiku are absolutely elemental to their beauty and appeal. These Haiku retain the exquisite character of traditional Haiku, but with the added elegance of rhyme. The reader can either 'power read' through all of the Haiku, or use the calendar format to read one Haiku each day as a 'thought nugget' to stimulate hungry brain cells.

This groundbreaking collection offers an understanding of why Cuban-American literature and visual art have emerged in the United States and how they are so essentially linked to both Cuban and American cultures. The contributors explore crucial issues pertinent not only to Cuban-American cultural production but also to other immigrant groups—hybrid identities, biculturation, bilingualism, immigration, adaptation, and exile. The complex ways in which Cuban Americans have been able to keep a living memory of Cuba while developing and thriving in America are both intriguing and instructive. These essays, written from a variety of perspectives, range from useful overviews of fictional and visual works of art to close readings of individual texts.

Much of the poetry written by W. H. Auden between 1939 and the time of his death consists of syllabic verse, or lines arranged in accordance with a predetermined syllable-count but no fixed number or distribution of stresses. This book presents a comprehensive, in-depth analysis of his many and widely varied syllabics, grouping them primarily by the formal sub-categories to which they belong (as measured by line-length, stanza-type, or some other aspect of their overall design). With this approach the book clarifies the dynamic range and technical inventiveness of Auden’s syllabics. It also shows how his work of compares with that of Robert Bridges and Marianne Moore, two pioneers in the writing of English syllabic whose verse he was familiar with.
